No—Billy Bob Thornton has not confirmed that he is leaving Landman. He said he would be there for Season 3, and Paramount announced that Season 3 production began in Fort Worth on October 1, 2026. The rumor appears to have blurred a plot change—Tommy Norris being fired from M-Tex—with Thornton’s future on the show.
What did Billy Bob Thornton say about leaving Landman?
In a report quoting an interview with USA Today, Thornton pushed back on the claim that he was leaving, calling it an “AI-generated” report with “nothing to do with reality.” Asked about Season 3, he said: “I’ll be there.” Parade reported his comments on January 19, 2026.

Before the Season 2 finale, Thornton told Esquire: “I’m signed up for like five years or something, so as long as they want me, I’ll be there.” He later described his prospective tenure conditionally: “I’ll be here as long as it plays out. If it’s five years, great. If it’s six, I’m there.” Those remarks indicate he expects to continue while the show continues; they are not a guarantee of a particular number of seasons or a precise contract term. Esquire published the interview on January 18, 2026.
Why did viewers think Tommy Norris was leaving?
Late in Season 2, Tommy is fired as president of M-Tex. In the finale, he starts a new family company, CTT: Oil Exploration and Cattle. That changes Tommy’s position in the story, but it is not evidence that Thornton is leaving the series. Esquire’s January 20 report explains the distinction.

Has Landman Season 3 started production?
Yes. As of October 8, 2026, Paramount’s official press page links to its October 1 announcement that Season 3 production had commenced in Fort Worth, Texas. That confirms production began; the cited announcement does not establish a release date. See Paramount Press Express’s Landman page.

The clearest available answer is that Thornton said he would be there for Season 3, and production has begun. His comments about staying “as long as they want” and for “like five years or something” are conditional and approximate. They should not be read as a guarantee that Landman will run for five seasons—or any fixed length.
