But they are not the same kind of story. Sunny follows a bereaved woman in Kyoto and a domestic robot as they investigate her family’s disappearance; Severance centers on employees whose work and personal memories have been surgically divided. Sunny premiered in 2024 and was reported canceled after one season.
What is Sunny about?
Sunny is a ten-episode mystery thriller with a darkly comic bent. Rashida Jones plays Suzie, an American living in Kyoto whose husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. Her husband’s electronics company sends her a domestic robot named Sunny. Suzie initially resents the machine, but the two form an unexpected friendship as they investigate what happened to her family and encounter secrets surrounding the company.
Apple describes the series as a story in which Suzie and Sunny become “dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.” That is the show’s central pull: a personal loss becomes a route into a concealed technological world.
Is Sunny like Severance?
Yes, in the broad sense that both are speculative Apple dramas where unusual technology opens onto a larger mystery. The resemblance ends at that level. Sunny is driven by grief, a missing family, and the bond between a woman and a robot. Severance begins with a procedure that separates employees’ work memories from their personal memories, then follows Mark and his coworkers as they try to understand Lumon Industries and the consequences of severance.

| Comparison | Sunny | Severance |
|---|---|---|
| Speculative device | A domestic robot given to a bereaved woman | A procedure dividing work and personal memories |
| Main setting | Kyoto and the hidden world around Suzie’s family | Lumon Industries and its employees |
| Central mystery | What happened to Suzie’s husband and son? | What is Lumon doing, and what does severance mean for Mark and his coworkers? |
The comparison is useful if you want another technology-centered mystery, but it does not establish that the shows are alike in quality, popularity, audience size, or cultural standing. Their premises and emotional centers are distinct.
