The headline refers to Adam Sandler, but the evidence behind it does not scientifically prove that he is the most hated actor of all time. Secondary reports describe a ranking based on low ratings for films in which actors appeared—not a survey measuring how audiences feel about actors themselves.
Why Adam Sandler was named
A September 2025 article by Indian Defence Review attributes the ranking to data analyst and entertainment journalist Daniel Parris, whose analysis reportedly placed Sandler first. A July 2026 SensaCine report also identifies Sandler as the top name. Neither account is the original analysis, and neither makes the result an academic finding or a representative measure of public opinion.
The Indian Defence Review article says five Sandler films met the analysis’s criteria. The underlying dataset, full calculations, sampling frame, and reproducible study were not located. The result is best described as a reported ranking, not a settled verdict about what audiences think of Sandler.

What the ranking reportedly measured
According to the secondary accounts, Parris examined films with unusually high numbers or shares of ratings in the lowest range on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Letterboxd. The accounts say a film qualified if at least 20% of its ratings fell in that range, after which the analysis looked at which actors appeared repeatedly in the selected films. The exact platform-by-platform rules and calculations are not provided in the reports.
That approach measures low ratings attached to a selected set of films. It does not directly measure dislike of an actor, account consistently for how many films each actor has made or how many people saw them, or establish a permanent worldwide ranking. IMDb describes its ratings as daily computed averages of audience votes, a platform-specific signal rather than a universal survey of moviegoers. IMDb’s data page explains its ratings and data offerings.

Does the ranking prove audiences hate Sandler?
No. A film can attract low ratings for many reasons, and a movie rating is not the same thing as a rating of every actor in its cast. The reported method may identify actors recurring in poorly rated films, but that is a narrower claim than measuring which actor people dislike most.
Calling the result “scientifically proven” overstates what the available accounts establish. The original materials were not located, and the reports do not document a representative survey, a consistent comparison across all actors, or a way to distinguish reactions to an actor from reactions to a particular film.

Is Sandler still a box office hit?
There is evidence of substantial streaming attention, but streaming minutes and theatrical ticket sales are different measures. IMDb News reported that Happy Gilmore 2 accumulated 2.9 billion minutes during its opening weekend in Nielsen’s Top 10 reporting. That figure describes streaming viewership; it is not a theatrical gross. IMDb News reported the Nielsen figure on August 21, 2025.
The Indian Defence Review article also claims Murder Mystery was streamed in more than 70 million households during its debut month. That specific figure is not independently verified by the primary sources cited here, so it should be treated as a claim made by that article, not an established theatrical result.
IMDb’s box-office FAQ defines gross figures as cumulative theatrical receipts for a specified territory and says they do not include DVD or Blu-ray sales or rentals. The cited sources do not establish a current theatrical gross that independently verifies the headline’s “box office hit” description. For the distinction, see IMDb’s box-office FAQ, updated September 2, 2025.

Which claims should be treated cautiously?
- “Most hated actor of all time”: a sensational interpretation of a secondary-reported, film-rating-based exercise—not a direct measurement of actor popularity or dislike.
- 37 Razzie nominations and 12 wins: the Indian Defence Review article gives these counts, but they were not corroborated by an authoritative Razzie source in the material cited here.
- More than 70 million Murder Mystery households: a figure reported by Indian Defence Review that was not independently verified here.
- 2.9 billion Happy Gilmore 2 minutes: a reported streaming metric attributed to Nielsen’s Top 10, not a measure of cinema ticket sales.
