INXS’s “Never Tear Us Apart” won triple j’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs, an all-time listener poll counted down on 26 July 2025. The poll invited votes for Australian releases from any period; it was separate from the station’s annual Hottest 100 of 2025.
Who won triple j’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs?
INXS took the top spot with “Never Tear Us Apart,” from the band’s 1987 album Kick. The result reflects listeners’ votes in a retrospective poll, not an objective or critical determination of the greatest Australian song.
The Guardian reported that the poll received more than 2.65 million votes, attributing the tally to Triple J. The Guardian also described it as the fourth-biggest Hottest 100 the station had run and said its vote total exceeded each of the previous four annual Hottest 100 polls; those comparisons are the report’s, rather than independently verified figures from ABC. How this poll differs from the annual Hottest 100
The Australian Songs poll was a special all-time vote: listeners could choose Australian releases from any period. It was not a ranking limited to music released in 2025, and it should not be confused with the separate annual Hottest 100 of 2025. The Guardian situated the special poll in triple j’s 50th-anniversary year and noted that the January 2025 annual countdown included 29 songs by Australian acts. That is context about the two polls, not an explanation for why INXS won.

A poll placing songs from different eras in the same countdown records the preferences of the people who voted; it does not, by itself, establish how one generation votes compared with another. In the Guardian’s wider discussion of music discovery, triple j head Lachlan Macara said: “What I hear from Australian artists is that it can be a real challenge to cut through the algorithm.” That observation is context about discovery barriers, not a claim about the reason this song won.
