Damien Darkblood is a demon detective whose investigation of the Guardians of the Globe murders makes him an early threat to the secret behind Omni-Man. The animated series later gives him a much larger role by sending his story into Hell—an expansion beyond the comic character’s original arc.

Spoilers: The sections below discuss Darkblood’s Season 1 banishment and later-season Hell storyline.

Who is Damien Darkblood?

In the television series, Darkblood is a demon detective investigating the deaths of the Guardians of the Globe. His inquiries connect him to the show’s central mystery about Omni-Man. He becomes a problem for the Global Defense Agency’s effort to manage what the public learns, and GDA chief Cecil Stedman banishes him from Earth in Season 1, according to TechRadar’s account of the character.

That banishment is the turning point between Darkblood’s two television functions: first an investigator on Earth, then a character with a continuing role in the Hell storyline.

Why does the show bring him back?

The television series uses Darkblood’s removal from Earth as a route into a story the comics did not tell. TechRadar reports that the Hell-centered plot follows the Season 3 finale’s mid-credits scene and is original to the show, rather than a direct adaptation of a comic arc.

Robert Kirkman had considered an Invincible story about going to Hell and fighting the devil, but said he never found the right time to write it in the comics. In a statement attributed to Kirkman by Variety and reproduced by TechRadar, he described the familiar superhero premise and said, “I never got around to doing anything like that in Invincible. I kept getting side-tracked and there was never a good time. So, it’s entirely possible that we may be doing something like that in the show.” The comment explains the opening for the adaptation: the series can explore an idea Kirkman had not worked into the comic run.

GamesRadar+ separately reports Kirkman telling SFX, “What was going on in Hell, and what Hell is in the Invincible universe, I think will come as a surprise to some people.” That remark signals an unexpected take on the setting; it does not establish that the show’s Hell story is part of comic continuity.

How does Damien Darkblood differ in the comics?

The key difference is how far the character’s story goes. The comics leave Darkblood’s arc at the point where Season 1’s television story leaves him. The animated series continues beyond that point, using his banishment to involve him in a Hell plot that the comics did not develop.

Aspect Comics Television series
Initial role Darkblood’s story ends after his initial role, as described in TechRadar’s comparison. A demon detective investigating the Guardians’ deaths and the mystery around Omni-Man.
What follows his Earth story No corresponding Hell arc is reported in the comics. Season 4 reporting describes a show-original Hell storyline following the Season 3 finale’s mid-credits scene.
Adaptation basis Kirkman said he had planned, but never found time to write, an Invincible story about Hell. The series uses that unrealized premise to continue Darkblood’s narrative role.

The comparison is about this character arc, not a claim that every aspect of Hell in the series is outside the comics or that the show’s entire portrayal of Hell is comic canon. TechRadar’s reporting on the adaptation is available here; GamesRadar+ reports the separate SFX comment here.
