Laila says acting was never part of her plan: she was 15 when director Mehmood persuaded her to appear in her first film. Her path then led from a Tamil debut in Kallazhagar (1999) to the recognition she associates with Parthen Rasithen, and to the memorable performances in Nandha and Pithamagan. In recent interviews, she has described a continued search for roles with emotional range—including a new challenge in the vertical micro-drama Move On Rajeshwari.
How Laila says she started acting
“I never wanted to be an actor,” Laila told Cinema Express in 2026. She recalled that director Mehmood persuaded her to act in Dushman Duniya Ka when she was 15. The Times of India dates that film, her first, to 1996; her Tamil debut came later, in Kallazhagar (1999), according to Cinema Express and the Times of India.
Her early career crossed South Indian film industries. In a 2019 interview with Scroll.in, Laila recalled that some Tamil dialects were difficult for her, including the colloquial speech in Pithamagan. She said timely scripts and practice helped her prepare.
Which films brought Laila wider attention?
Laila has named Parthen Rasithen as the first film that put a spotlight on her. “The very first film that put a spotlight on me was Parthen Rasithen,” she told the Times of India in 2026. She has separately called Nandha one of her most memorable films. These are her own recollections of the roles’ importance in her career, not a ranking of their audience or box-office success.

What Laila has said about working with Bala
Laila’s accounts of Nandha and Pithamagan trace a changing working relationship with director Bala. In interviews, she has described following his instructions on Nandha; by Pithamagan, she felt she had earned his trust. Her comments suggest an evolution in their creative collaboration rather than a single defining moment.
In a 2019 interview with Scroll.in, she also discussed the challenge of performing in Pithamagan’s colloquial Tamil. In a 2022 conversation with Cinema Express, she reflected on her pursuit of substantial parts: “The quest in my career has always been for performance-oriented roles”.

Why Laila now looks for performance-led roles
Laila has said she wants roles that give her room to perform and explore different emotions, rather than simply repeat an established screen image. In 2022, she spoke of wanting to move beyond the “chirpy heroine” perception. In a 2026 interview with DT Next, she put her current preference this way: “Now, I prefer roles that give me scope to perform and explore different emotions.” She has also said she does not want another typical mother role.
She has explained her break from acting as a willing choice after having children: she wanted to raise them herself. That is the reason she has given for stepping away, without suggesting that it was imposed on her.

What is Move On Rajeshwari?
Move On Rajeshwari is a Tamil vertical micro-drama featuring Laila, identified by Cinema Express as a Sun NXT title. DT Next described it in September 2026 as recently released and called it her OTT debut. Platform availability can change, so check Sun NXT for its current listing.
Laila has described the format as a different acting challenge, not simply feature-film acting squeezed into shorter episodes. Cinema Express quoted her saying each episode is two minutes; DT Next described the episodes as under two minutes. DT Next also quoted Laila saying the production completed 60 episodes in four days. Those figures refer to this series as reported in the 2026 interviews, not to micro-dramas generally.
