Lapachhapi is a Marathi-language horror feature directed by Vishal Furia. In a 2017 interview with Scroll.in, Furia described a village-set story shaped by social concerns and said he wanted to make horror without the sex-and-songs formula he hoped to avoid. His comments also offer a useful guide to the film’s recurring images—and to why he later remade it in Hindi as Chhorii.
What is Lapachhapi about?
Furia’s film follows a pregnant woman and her husband in a story set largely in a quiet village. The 2017 Scroll.in interview describes rural scenery and sugarcane fields as central to the film’s atmosphere. The cast named in that interview includes Pooja Sawant, Vikram Gaikwad, and Usha Naik.
Scroll.in reported an Indian release date of July 14, 2017, and placed the film in the context of a London Indian Film Festival premiere. These details are reported in the interview’s indexed text; they are not a fresh check of an official release calendar. Read the Scroll.in interview.
Why did Furia choose horror and Marathi?
Furia described Lapachhapi as “a socially relevant horror film.” He said he wanted to make “pure horror” without sex and songs, framing that as his own creative aim rather than a judgment about the wider Indian film industry. In the Scroll.in interview, he said: “I really wanted to change the face of the horror genre in India, and fortunately I had this story to tell, which could be executed in a certain budget.”

A later reflection gives more context to his choice of genre. In an April 2025 Eastern Eye interview, Furia recalled choosing horror because he felt it was underserved and described Lapachhapi as his Marathi debut. That is his retrospective perspective, not an independently measured account of the genre’s market. Read the 2025 Eastern Eye interview.
What do the sari, sugarcane fields, and tape recorder signify?
Furia identified the sari, sugarcane fields, and tape recorder as motifs and symbols in the screenplay. He did not say that audiences had to decode them to follow or enjoy the film. The interview supports treating these as recurring elements, but not assigning each one a specific symbolic meaning beyond what Furia stated.

How did Lapachhapi become Chhorii?
Chhorii is the Hindi remake of Lapachhapi. In a December 2021 Eastern Eye interview, Furia said the remake was intended to bring the film and its message to a wider audience. He described horror as “a very impactful genre.” Read the 2021 Eastern Eye interview.
The 2021 article reported that Chhorii was then streaming on Amazon Prime Video and quoted Furia saying Amazon Prime planned a release across 240 territories. Those are historical statements from that interview; they do not establish the film’s current availability or verify its present territorial distribution. Current streaming or purchase availability for Lapachhapi is not established by these interviews.

How did the film come together?
Furia recalled that he began writing the script in 2013 and completed it with Vishal Kapoor by mid-2014. He also described struggling to find a producer and a release partner. These are his recollections as reported in the 2017 Scroll.in interview, rather than independently documented production records.
