She also reflected on how she came to the studio, the label’s approach to developing artists, and the challenge of making music amid streaming-era pressures. Her account is a historical snapshot, not confirmation of her current role or the studio’s present operations.
How Constança Scofield came to Toca do Bandido
Scofield’s route into music ran through both a law degree and a band. In the 2023 interview, she recalled taking music lessons as a child and later playing with Érika in Penélope while on a break from her law studies. When the band looked for a producer, she met Tom Capone. She said Capone brought producer Álvaro Alencar to Rio, and she and Alencar chose the Itanhangá house where the studio was established.
Scofield said she left Penélope in 2003, passed the Brazilian bar exam and had a child. The following year, Capone died in a motorcycle crash after the Latin Grammy ceremony. She described eventually taking a central role at Toca do Bandido after his death. A 2022 Harper’s Bazaar profile also portrayed her as leading the studio and label at that time; neither account establishes her current position.
Why she describes the studio as a “sacred temple”
Scofield’s account of Toca do Bandido combines technical decisions with a deliberate idea of what a recording space should feel like. She said the studio was built and equipped to serve major Brazilian and international artists. She credited the acoustic project to Renato Cipriano, then design director at WSDG and later founder and president of Sonic Arts, and described purpose-designed cabling, a large collection of instruments and amplifiers, reused demolition materials, an adobe-brick structure and an unusual facade.

Those details, in her telling, were meant to support an organic and inspiring environment—freer, less controlled and more enjoyable than a purely functional room. This is Scofield’s description of the studio’s design intent, not an independent technical assessment of its acoustics or equipment.
“Hoje o estúdio é considerado um templo sagrado da música e as pessoas rendem muito respeito a toda a sua história e a forma como ele foi preservado e colocado à serviço da música.”

Translation: “Today the studio is considered a sacred temple of music, and people show great respect for its entire history and for the way it has been preserved and placed at the service of music.” Scofield also recalled Capone saying, “Quanto mais trabalho com música, menos acredito em fronteiras”—“The more I work with music, the less I believe in boundaries.” The statement is her recollection of his words.
Toca Discos: a production label, in Scofield’s definition
Scofield drew a distinction between a label-services company and what she called a production label. In her explanation, a services company can provide or outsource functions such as artistic support and marketing without necessarily building a catalog. Toca Discos, by contrast, was described as centering its work on production, artist development and building a body of recordings.

She said the label’s mission included working with artists from peripheral communities and helping emerging musicians advance through projects. In the May 2023 interview, Scofield said Toca Discos’ catalog was approaching 1,000 phonograms. That is her estimate at the time, not an audited figure or a current count.
The interview also reported that the label had run two editions of Aceleração Musical Labsonica Toca do Bandido with Oi Futuro and connected the work discussed to four Latin Grammy nominations. Scofield said artists were chosen through public calls, while the label also produced work by acts including The Baggios, Chico Chico and João Mantuano, and Chal. These are details she shared in 2023; the interview does not establish that the program, partnership or roster remains active.

Her view of genre, streaming and creative judgment
Scofield argued that music had become more hybrid as artists gained greater control over production and could draw on samples and references from earlier eras. She noted that Brazilian music has a long history of mixing influences, while cautioning that chasing a proven sound can make new work feel like a formula with different styling.
On shorter introductions and streaming consumption patterns, she did not present a measured account of listener behavior. Rather, she made a professional argument: strong A&R and production judgment can help artists make strategic choices in response to algorithms and audience habits without sacrificing what makes the music distinctive. The balance, in her view, is to adapt where useful while leaving room for genuinely new music.

What this interview can—and cannot—tell readers
The May 21, 2023 conversation was published by POPLINE and also carried by Mundo da Música; the two versions substantially repeat the same interview. Read together with the October 2022 Harper’s Bazaar profile, they offer a portrait of Scofield’s career and views at those points in time. They do not verify her 2026 title, current studio operations or booking availability, present label services, new artist calls, or an up-to-date catalog total.
