International Talk Like a Pirate Day falls on September 19 each year. It is an unofficial, playful observance—not a public holiday—and you can join in with a pirate greeting, a story, or a simple themed activity.
When is International Talk Like a Pirate Day?
It is observed every year on September 19. The day is a parody holiday, not an officially recognized public holiday in the United States or elsewhere, according to the National Maritime Historical Society.
Who started it, and why September 19?
John Baur and Mark Summers trace the idea to a racquetball game at a YMCA on June 6, 1995. Their joking pirate-style banter during the game sparked the idea for a day devoted to talking like pirates.
The founders chose a different date. Baur, who writes as Ol’ Chumbucket, explained on the official Talk Like a Pirate Day site: “Recognizing the historical importance of June 6, we picked a different day for the holiday, Sept. 19.”

For years, it remained a private joke among the founders and their friends. Humor columnist Dave Barry helped spread it in 2002 by writing about the observance in his syndicated column. The creators’ account and Timeanddate describe how the day moved beyond its original circle.
Did historical pirates really say “arrr, matey”?
Not as one universal pirate accent. Pirates came from many places, including Scotland, Ireland, France, Sweden, and London; they would have spoken in the varied ways sailors of their time did. No single voice represents them all.

The familiar “arrr” sound owes much to actor Robert Newton’s West Country accent in the 1950 television adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. His performance helped shape later portrayals, as the Royal Museums Greenwich explains. The comic voice is a pop-culture convention, not a reliable guide to historical speech.

The joke is the make-believe, not the real history: piracy involved violence and harm. The National Maritime Historical Society frames the day as an invitation to silliness rather than a celebration of that violence.
