What the trailer shows
Netflix announced the trailer on August 25, 2025, presenting the film as a comic, nostalgic pursuit story. Zende’s target is described as the “Swimsuit Killer,” setting up a cat-and-mouse chase rather than a strictly documentary-style account. In the announcement, Bajpayee said, “What fascinated me about Inspector Zende was that he wasn’t chasing glory.” Netflix’s trailer announcement

Who plays Inspector Zende and Carl Bhojraj?
Manoj Bajpayee plays Inspector Madhukar Zende, the historical Mumbai police inspector. Jim Sarbh plays Carl Bhojraj, the film’s reimagined version of historical criminal Charles Sobhraj. Netflix’s title page also lists Sachin Khedekar, Girija Oak Godbole, Bhalchandra Kadam, Vaibhav Mangale, Harish Dudhade, Onkar Raut, Bharat Savale and Devaang Bagga in the cast. Is Inspector Zende based on a true story?
Netflix describes the film as “loosely inspired by a true story.” The real Zende and Charles Sobhraj are the historical reference points, but Sarbh’s character is named Carl Bhojraj in the film. That renaming and the trailer’s comic tone are reminders that this is dramatized storytelling, not a claim to reproduce every event exactly. TIME’s account of the real pursuit also distinguishes Sobhraj from the film’s reimagined Carl Bhojraj. TIME’s account of the historical story
