Inside Serena Williams’ Weight-Loss Journey: What She Has Said About Her Health

Serena Williams said she began using the GLP-1 medication Zepbound after postpartum weight-loss efforts that included intensive exercise and healthy eating did not move her past a personal plateau. In an August 2025 interview with Vogue, she described feeling lighter mentally, more confident and more like her old self. Her account is personal testimony, not a published clinical report: her dose, treatment duration and medical monitoring have not been disclosed.

What did Serena Williams say about losing weight after having a baby?

Williams connected her weight struggle to the period after the 2023 birth of her second daughter, Adira. In her August 21, 2025 Vogue interview, she said she had been exercising intensively and eating healthily but was unable to get below a weight plateau that mattered to her. She said she chose to try Zepbound through Ro as additional help.

Her account followed years of public comments about postpartum body changes. Her first daughter, Olympia, was born in 2017; later interviews described weight and body frustrations after that birth, too. In June 2024, while discussing motherhood and her health with Entertainment Tonight, Williams spoke about wanting to reach a personal weight goal. The later Vogue interview identified medication as part of her approach.

Is she taking Ozempic, or another GLP-1?

The medication Williams named was Zepbound, not Ozempic. In the Vogue interview, she said she accessed it through Ro. Access Hollywood/NBC also identified her as a paid Ro spokesperson, a relevant commercial relationship when considering coverage of the service.

Williams’s statement establishes what she said she used at that time; it does not establish whether she is using it now. The published accounts cited here do not specify whether her prescription was for a branded or compounded formulation, or disclose her dose, how long she used it, the criteria for prescribing it or the details of her clinical follow-up. Her experience cannot establish whether the medication is appropriate for another person.

Did diet and exercise work for her?

Williams said she continued working out and eating healthily, but those efforts alone had not moved her below the plateau she described. She presented medication as help alongside those habits, not as a substitute for them. The sources do not provide independent measurements of her weight change or clinical outcomes, so her reported feelings should not be treated as verified medical results.

Why did Williams choose to talk about the medication?

Williams said transparency mattered more to her than speculation about her body. In Vogue, she said, “I don’t really care what people are saying about my body anymore. But what is important to me is transparency.” She also pushed back against the idea that medication use is necessarily a shortcut, saying, “Sometimes you need help,” and that people can make that choice for themselves.

In an Access Hollywood/NBC interview, she described the stigma surrounding weight-loss medication as something people can feel they must keep secret or fear will be judged as “a shortcut.” Her stated reason for speaking openly was to make that discussion less shameful. That is her explanation for sharing her experience, not a claim that everyone should make the same choice.

What other health issue has she discussed recently?

In 2024, Williams spoke publicly about a lump in her neck that turned out to be a benign branchial cyst. The Associated Press and the Women’s Tennis Association reported that she had noticed it growing, underwent imaging and further tests, and had it removed. Williams described it as the size of a “small grapefruit.” Reporting on the biopsy said it was negative for cancer; she later said she was recovering and grateful to be healthy.

In a post-surgery message reported by the Associated Press, Williams said, “So this is me removing it. I am feeling so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy.” The cyst episode is separate from her account of postpartum weight management; the reporting does not connect the two.
