Spoilers for all of Inside Out 2, including its final scene and post-credits tag. Riley’s panic attack peaks when Anxiety’s effort to protect her turns into control: she pushes Riley toward a version of herself designed to avoid mistakes and win approval. The ending is not about defeating or removing Anxiety. It shows Riley beginning to accept a more complicated sense of self, without having to prove she is always good enough.
What happens at the end of Inside Out 2?
At hockey camp, Riley wants to impress Valentina, an older player, and the coach. Anxiety tries to manage every possible outcome, while Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui join the effort to help Riley fit in. Riley’s choices begin to strain her friendships, and she ends up in the penalty box.
Inside Headquarters, Joy reaches the console and tries to stop Anxiety from running Riley’s life. Anxiety spirals into the electric vortex that keeps Joy away from the controls. In the real world, Riley becomes overwhelmed; the inside and outside crises converge in her panic attack.
The turning point is not Joy declaring that happiness should rule every moment. The other emotions help her see that Riley needs her, and Joy steps forward. The film then returns to Riley’s present experience and closes with her looking at herself in the mirror.

What does the ending of Inside Out 2 mean?
Riley is more than one belief
Disney describes Riley’s Sense of Self as being made up of her beliefs. In the film, that structure gives a visible form to identity: memories and experiences can support competing ideas about who she is. The climax loosens the hold of any single emotion, fear or mistake as the definition of Riley. Her self-understanding is changing and layered, but it remains her own.
Anxiety wants to protect Riley, but takes over
Anxiety is not portrayed as evil. Her aim is to prepare Riley for the future and shield her from failure or rejection. The harm comes when that protective impulse becomes a takeover, leaving little room for Riley to respond to what is happening now.

Writer Meg LeFauve described the pressure underneath Riley’s behavior this way: “It’s not about, ‘I love this,’ but ‘Will they accept me?’” Riley may be trying to succeed at hockey, but success cannot answer the deeper question of whether other people will accept her. Impressing Valentina or winning does not automatically quiet the fear that she is not good enough.
Joy needs to step forward, not stay in charge
Director Kelsey Mann described Joy’s arc in the sequel as learning to step forward, following the first film’s lesson that she needed to step back and make room for Sadness. That change is not a return to Joy controlling everything. The finale suggests that Riley needs the emotions to work together, with Joy present to help her experience life as it unfolds rather than measure her worth only by achievements.

The mirror is the film’s final answer
Mann said he wanted Riley’s last look in the mirror to end with her smiling at what she sees. He wanted the image to include stray hairs and pimples rather than present an idealized version of her. As he put it, “This movie is all about learning to love who you are, flaws and all.” The mirror makes that idea personal: Riley does not need to become flawless before she can accept herself.
Why does Riley have a panic attack?
Riley’s panic attack comes as Anxiety’s future-focused effort to protect her has crowded out the present. Riley is trying to secure acceptance by fitting in and avoiding mistakes; the pressure builds as she worries about how others see her. Anxiety’s intentions may be protective, but her attempt to control every outcome intensifies that pressure rather than resolving it.

LeFauve also said, “The truth is that Envy tells you what you want.” In Riley’s case, the new emotions help reveal what she wants, but wanting approval becomes painful when she treats it as proof that she is good enough.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Anxiety the villain in Inside Out 2?
No. Anxiety is a protective emotion, not a villain the story needs to destroy. Her concern for Riley becomes damaging when she takes over and treats avoiding failure or winning approval as the only priorities. The ending resolves the conflict through a more cooperative emotional life; it does not erase Anxiety or promise that Riley will never feel anxious again.

What is Riley’s Deep Dark Secret?
The post-credits tag introduces Deep Dark Secret, voiced by Steve Purcell according to Disney’s project profile. The official material cited here does not disclose what Riley’s secret is, so any specific answer should be treated as speculation, not established story fact. The tag leaves the joke unresolved.
What the ending leaves open
The film offers a direction for Riley’s relationship with herself, not a claim that adolescence or anxiety has been solved. Her beliefs can change as she gains new experiences, and the story does not establish a single final version of her identity. The ending’s emphasis is on accepting an imperfect self while living with a range of emotions.
For the film’s official overview, see Pixar’s Inside Out 2 page and Disney Movies’ film page. Mann discusses the film in The Walt Disney Company interview and the ending in TheWrap interview; LeFauve discusses adolescent anxiety in The Credits interview. Disney’s project profile identifies Riley as 13 and lists the voice cast, including Purcell as Deep Dark Secret.
