Pixar’s Inside Out 2 became the first animated film to reach $1 billion in worldwide box-office revenue, according to Disney, which announced the milestone on June 30, 2024. The studio said the film crossed the threshold in 19 days—the fastest an animated film had done so at that time.
What the $1 billion milestone means
The milestone refers to worldwide theatrical box-office revenue, not domestic earnings alone. Disney’s June 30, 2024 announcement described Inside Out 2 as both the first animated film to earn $1 billion worldwide and the fastest animated film to reach that mark. Those are studio-reported historical claims, not a current ranking or an independently described audit. Disney’s announcement

- Disney and Pixar?s ?Inside Out 2? returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is disrupted by something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren?t sure how to feel when Anxiety and friends show up.
The early box office offered context for that pace. In its June 16 report, Disney estimated the film’s domestic opening at $154 million and its worldwide opening at $292 million. These were opening-weekend estimates reported at the time, not final grosses. Disney also called the worldwide opening the biggest for an animated film then, using current exchange rates and a like-for-like-market comparison. Disney’s June 16 report
What was its worldwide box office later?
The $1 billion figure marks the threshold Disney announced on June 30; it is not the film’s final total. On July 24, 2024, Disney reported that Inside Out 2 had reached $1.46 billion worldwide and had surpassed Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated film globally at that time. This is a dated historical ranking, not a statement about the current leader. Disney’s July 24 update

What the record does—and does not—show
The 19-day milestone establishes how quickly the film crossed a worldwide box-office threshold, as Disney reported it. It does not, by itself, establish why audiences went to see the movie. Disney executive Tony Chambers celebrated the result as evidence that global audiences would come out for a great movie; that is his interpretation of the milestone, not an independently demonstrated explanation of audience behavior.
Director Kelsey Mann described the sequel as answering a question posed at the end of the first film: “At the end of the first film, Joy asked the audience a question. She says, ‘after all Riley is 12 now, what could happen?’ Well, I wanted to answer that question,” he said in Disney’s opening-weekend report. This gives Mann’s creative framing, rather than a box-office explanation.
