Necker Island is a 74-acre private resort in the North Sound of the British Virgin Islands, where guests can book the entire island or reserve rooms on selected dates. It is not presented by its operator as a public sightseeing attraction: access described by the available information is tied to a stay. The experience is marketed as all-inclusive, but scuba diving, spa treatments and several other activities cost extra.
Where is Necker Island?
Necker Island sits in the North Sound of the British Virgin Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Virgin Limited Edition places it east of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The operator gives its area as 74 acres (year not stated on the source page; accessed 2026). These are operator-published details, not independently reported measurements. Although the name is closely associated with Richard Branson, the property is described as a private resort. The available booking information establishes overnight stays, not a general visitor-access program or open-day tours.
How did Richard Branson come to own it?
Virgin’s corporate timeline records that Branson purchased Necker Island in 1978 and says it later became his family home. The same timeline places the launch of Virgin Limited Edition in 2000, with Necker Island among its initial properties. The purchase and the hospitality collection’s launch are separate milestones. Branson has also offered a personal explanation for the purchase. In a first-person Virgin blog post about his wife Joan, he wrote: “She was also the inspiration behind Necker Island, which I originally bought in an effort to impress her!” That is Branson’s account of his motivation, not an independently verified explanation. How can guests book a stay?
Virgin Limited Edition offers two broad formats. Exclusive-use bookings are available at any time of year; individual rooms, or several rooms in a private Balinese house, are offered on selected dates. Minimum stays may apply. The operator directs prospective guests to its booking engine for current availability and rates, and does not establish a general public day-visit option in the information described here. | Booking format | What it means | Availability considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive use | Private use of the island for a group. | Offered throughout the year; check current rates and any minimum stay with the operator. |
| Individual stay | One room or several rooms in a private Balinese house, rather than hiring the whole island. | Only on selected dates; minimum stays may apply and dates can change. |
As of 8 October 2026, the operator’s individual-stays page listed 20–27 October and 18–29 November 2026, with the November listing marked check-out only, as well as selected dates from January through December 2027. These are time-sensitive listings, not a guarantee that a room remains available; check the booking engine for the dates you want. Virgin Limited Edition individual stays
How many people can stay?
Virgin Limited Edition describes the standard arrangement as sleeping up to 48 guests across eleven Great House bedrooms and ten individual Bali Houses. For larger celebrations, it says four additional bedrooms and a bunkroom can be booked, describing capacity as up to 56 guests plus 14 children across two bunkrooms. Its FAQ separately gives a total of 56 adults and 14 children. These figures refer to different stated arrangements; confirm the room configuration and group capacity for a specific booking with the operator. What does an all-inclusive stay cover?
The operator calls Necker Island all-inclusive. Its FAQ says meals, drinks, a speedboat transfer from Beef Island and most on-island activities are included. “All-inclusive” does not mean every experience or purchase is covered; Virgin Limited Edition lists these as additional charges:
- Spa treatments
- Gift shop purchases
- Deep-sea fishing
- Jet-ski experiences
- Scuba diving
- Additional off-island excursions
The operator describes activities including hiking, paddleboarding, wildlife encounters, tennis, padel, pickleball, yoga and water sports. Because it says “most” activities are included and separately identifies some paid experiences, check the current inclusions and fees for a specific activity before booking. Virgin Limited Edition identifies Beef Island in Tortola (EIS) as the closest international airport. Its described transfer is a short drive from the airport to the dock, followed by a 30-minute speedboat trip to Necker Island. The FAQ also names Virgin Gorda (VIJ) as an airport option via regional connections.
