Loni Anderson and Burt Reynolds’ marriage ended in a highly public divorce, but the label “toxic” is an editorial judgment, not a legal or clinical finding. The documented story is one of a relationship formed on a film set, Reynolds’ 1993 divorce filing and public accusations, Anderson’s later account in her memoir, and financial and custody matters that unfolded over time.
How Loni Anderson and Burt Reynolds met and married
Anderson and Reynolds met while working on the 1983 film Stroker Ace, according to Biography.com. They married in a private ceremony at Reynolds’ Florida ranch on April 29, 1988, UPI reported the next day (UPI, April 30, 1988).

Why did Loni Anderson and Burt Reynolds divorce?
Reynolds filed for divorce on June 10, 1993, stating that the marriage was “irretrievably broken,” UPI reported (UPI, June 10, 1993). That phrase was the stated legal ground in the filing; it was not a detailed court finding about what had gone wrong between them.
Reynolds’ public accusations
During the separation, Reynolds accused Anderson of adultery in an August 1993 interview. UPI’s account records his allegation; it does not establish it as fact (UPI, August 23, 1993). The distinction matters: a public accusation during a bitter breakup is not the same as a verified finding.

What Anderson said about the marriage
Anderson published her autobiography, My Life in High Heels, in 1995. The Associated Press described it as an account that detailed the tumultuous marriage. Anderson said the book was about “the growth of a woman, a woman who survives,” and added, “I think if you’re going to write about yourself, you have to do it warts and all” (Associated Press, August 2025).
AP also reported Anderson’s reflection that the relationship faced constant tabloid attention and her later comment that their adopted son, Quinton, was the best decision of their relationship. Those retrospective remarks add her perspective, but they do not erase the painful and public nature of the separation. The memoir is Anderson’s own account, not a neutral court record.

Property, custody and support proceedings
The divorce filing was followed by separate property and child-support developments. They should not be collapsed into one settlement or treated as a single, uninterrupted court decision.
January 1994: property settlement
UPI reported on January 25, 1994, that the couple had reached an out-of-court property settlement. Custody still had to be resolved later, according to the report (UPI, January 25, 1994).
December 1994: child support and shared custody
After a contentious hearing and two days of testimony about Reynolds’ finances, the Los Angeles Times reported that the former couple reached a child-support agreement. The newspaper said the terms were not disclosed and reported that they shared custody of Quinton (Los Angeles Times, December 7, 1994).
Why the financial aftermath lasted much longer
The 1993–94 divorce and court developments did not mark the end of every financial connection. In a 2018 retrospective, the Los Angeles Times reported that it took the former couple 22 years to sever financial ties completely (Los Angeles Times, September 6, 2018). That duration describes the extended financial aftermath, not the length of the divorce filing or the 1994 proceedings.

What the public record does—and does not—establish
The timeline establishes the marriage, Reynolds’ stated legal reason for filing, public accusations attributed to him, reported property and child-support developments, and Anderson’s later memoir. It does not establish the truth of every claim made during the separation or provide a complete, independently verified account of private events. “Toxic” may capture how some readers interpret the public breakup, but it should not be mistaken for a formal determination.
