What happened at Carter’s home on Oct. 1?
Relatives gathered at the one-story Plains home Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, built in the early 1960s, before his election to the Georgia State Senate. The Associated Press reported that about 25 family members enjoyed cupcakes on the front lawn as aircraft flew overhead in Carter’s honor. The family planned to watch the vice-presidential debate that evening.

The reports describe the flyover differently. The AP called the aircraft antique World War II planes; The Carter Center’s later retrospective identified them as Navy fighter jets. Those descriptions should be attributed to their respective sources rather than combined into a single, definitive aircraft identification.
How was the family gathering different from the Atlanta concert?
The Plains birthday gathering was a private family occasion, not the public concert that had already taken place in Atlanta. The Carter Center’s “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song” was held Sept. 17 at the Fox Theatre, where more than 4,000 family members, friends and fans gathered.

The figures describe two different events and come from different sources; the AP’s count does not establish how many people may have visited Carter at other times that day.
What had the family planned for the day?
Before the birthday, Carter’s grandson Jason told Georgia Public Broadcasting that the family would spend the day with him in Plains and watch a broadcast of the concert. He described the occasion as a family day. That was an advance plan; the AP’s event-day account separately said relatives planned to watch the vice-presidential debate that evening. The reports do not establish that both broadcasts were watched, or when.

Jason Carter also told the AP: “Not everybody gets 100 years on this earth, and when somebody does, and when they use that time to do so much good for so many people, it’s worth celebrating.”

Carter was born in Plains on Oct. 1, 1924, making Oct. 1, 2024, his 100th birthday. The small gathering at home and the earlier concert were distinct parts of a wider period of centennial celebrations.
