Jennifer Aniston’s Bel Air residence is a 1965 A. Quincy Jones house whose modernist bones were kept intact while its interiors were made warmer and more comfortable. Working with designer Stephen Shadley, Aniston layered midcentury furniture, tactile finishes, art and carefully designed garden rooms into a home that feels less like a showroom than a place to live.
The Bel Air house and its reported history
Architectural Digest identifies the residence as a home designed by A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1965. Its 2025 retrospective reports a size of 8,500 square feet and an acquisition price of $20.97 million. The purchase year is not consistent across published accounts: AD says Aniston acquired it later in 2011, while the Associated Press reported in May 2025 that she bought it in 2012 for about $21 million. The safest account is that the purchase was around 2011–12, with the discrepancy noted rather than resolved.
When Aniston bought the house, it had recently been renovated by architect Frederick Fisher. In AD’s 2018 home tour, she recalled that the entry and Chinese-red front door did not suit her taste, though she could see the house’s potential. AD’s 2025 retrospective says Aniston and Justin Theroux spent two years renovating it. That publication also reported in May 2025 that Aniston still owned the property; current title records are not established here.
A modernist house made warmer
The design challenge was to update the interiors without losing the house’s modernist character. Aniston brought back Shadley, with contributions from Los Angeles designers Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Jane Hallworth. AD describes the approach as retaining the home’s modernist ethos while softening sharp lines with organic materials, tactile finishes and furnishings.

Aniston summed up the mix as “Old World meets New World.” The tour pairs midcentury furniture with hand-painted wallpaper, silk rugs with polished concrete, and antique Japanese screens with Abstract Expressionist paintings. Rather than treating comfort as an afterthought to glamour, Aniston told AD, “Sexy is important, but comfort is essential.” Shadley put the same priority another way: “No matter how beautiful or glamorous something is, it has to be warm and inviting.”
Details that make the interiors personal
Materials and custom elements give the rooms their distinct character. AD’s 2025 retrospective mentions a custom Calacatta marble tub. In a separate AD interview, Shadley described a bar made of walnut, bronze and mica, a wood-fired pizza oven in the main kitchen, and a sliding glass panel in the primary bathroom that opens to a private garden with an outdoor shower. These are details reported in AD’s tour and designer interview, not a claim of independent inspection.

The result depends on contrast: smooth concrete beside silk, the warmth of wood beside stone, and historic furnishings beside contemporary lines. Aniston told AD, “If I wasn’t an actress, I’d want to be a designer. I love the process.” The home tour shows that interest in the deliberate combination of objects and finishes rather than in a single signature style.
The landscape as a set of outdoor rooms
The grounds extend the house’s sense of indoor-outdoor living. Garden designer Marcello Villano and landscape architect Anne Attinger arranged alfresco areas as connected outdoor rooms, terraces and Asian-inspired pocket gardens. The property had previously included a hillside vineyard, according to AD’s 2018 coverage.

Shadley’s designer interview also describes a Japanese stone pagoda in a private garden. He noted that it required substantial internal steel to address earthquake safety. The feature is a useful example of how the garden combines a composed, contemplative look with practical structural considerations.
