But Indiana tourism organizations have used the show’s fictional setting to point fans toward real Hoosier oddities, eerie landmarks and themed experiences.
What the Indiana connection really means
The series places its story in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. That makes Indiana a natural hook for a trip inspired by the show, but it does not make the state a filming-location destination. Midwest Living reports that the show was filmed in Georgia.
Instead, Visit Indiana and local tourism groups have built fan-facing guides and promotions around actual places across the state. The attractions are real; the connection is their eerie, unusual or playful appeal—not a claim that they appeared on screen.
Indiana’s statewide oddities trail
Visit Indiana’s older Stranger Things-themed scavenger-hunt page listed 68 stops, spanning unusual natural features, historic sites and places associated with haunting stories. That figure belongs to that earlier guide. A later Visit Indiana microsite was described by Midwest Living in 2025 as featuring more than 70 eerie experiences. These are separate campaign lists, not one continuously updated count, and neither number measures visitors or tourism impact.

Examples in the state’s eerie-travel material include Rose Island at Charlestown State Park, Jug Rock, the Albany Shoe Tree, Saint Anne Shell Chapel, the Old Jail Inn and the Blue Lady Room at Story Inn. The Visit Indiana travel guide presents these as unusual or atmospheric places, not proof of supernatural activity. Confirm public access, seasonal operation and any admission or booking requirements before setting out.
The older scavenger-hunt guide also mentions the ruins of Hotel Mudlavia, but warns that the site is private and visitors must not trespass. A place appearing in a tourism guide is not automatically open to the public; follow posted restrictions and use only authorized access.

A Southern Indiana itinerary in Clark and Floyd counties
For a more focused route, SoIN—the tourism organization for Clark and Floyd counties—introduced a digital passport centered on unusual and eerie local places. Visit Indiana announced it as a year-round promotion in October 2024. It can serve as a starting point for planning a Southern Indiana outing, subject to checking that the passport and listed stops remain active.
SoIN also promoted a finale-season event weekend for October 23–25, 2025. Those dates have passed; they are historical events, not upcoming activities. The continuing status of the passport and the current availability of its attractions should be verified with SoIN’s official announcement.

Fan-themed stops in Indianapolis
Visit Indy’s guide points to a mix of unusual institutions and pop-culture-friendly stops, including the Indiana Medical History Museum, 16 Bit Bar & Arcade, Black House Cafe, Steer-In Diner, Skateland Indy and Elf ’N Moon Gaming & Hobby. These are independent destinations, not Stranger Things filming sites; their fit for a fan outing comes from the guide’s eerie or nostalgic framing and the experiences they offer.
The guide has also included a notice about a Stranger Things-related display at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, but its published end date has passed. Do not assume that exhibit is still on view. Check Visit Indy’s current guide and the venues’ own pages for present exhibits, hours, admission and age restrictions before visiting.

Bloomington’s themed hotel suite
Midwest Living has described a Stranger Things-themed suite at Graduate Bloomington, with a Joyce Byers-inspired living room and a Wheeler-family basement area. It is a lodging experience rather than a set location, and the cited coverage does not establish whether the suite is currently bookable. Contact the hotel directly to confirm availability, dates, rates and booking conditions before planning a stay around it.
How to choose a trip
- For a broad road trip: Use Visit Indiana’s statewide oddities material to select a few stops by geography; do not treat an older scavenger-hunt count as a current, complete inventory.
- For a regional itinerary: Check the status of SoIN’s digital passport and its Clark and Floyd county stops before traveling.
- For an Indianapolis day: Pick venues that match your interests, then verify their current hours and any time-sensitive exhibits directly.
- For an overnight fan experience: Ask Graduate Bloomington whether the themed suite is available for your dates before making it the basis of a trip.
Across all of these options, separate permanent attractions from limited-run displays and event dates. Confirm whether a site welcomes visitors, whether advance booking or admission is required, and whether its operating season affects access. Folklore and ghost stories can add atmosphere, but should be understood as stories rather than verified supernatural facts.
Why Indiana is making the invitation
Indiana’s campaign turns a fictional setting into a way to introduce travelers to real places they might otherwise overlook. As Amy Howell of the Indiana Destination Development Corporation put it, “Travelers are always looking for unique experiences, and Indiana has plenty to offer,” as quoted by Midwest Living.
