Independence Day 3 is not confirmed as an active production in the available reporting. In a 2024 interview, director Roland Emmerich said he had a story and was ready to go, but also said he still needed to speak with Disney. That indicates his interest—not studio approval, a production start, a cast, or a release date.
Is Independence Day 3 happening?
There is no confirmed third film based on the reported information. At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Emmerich told The Direct he had a story for another Independence Day and said, “I’m ready to go.” But when asked whether he had spoken with Disney, he indicated that he still needed to talk to someone there. The report described no official progress on a third film at that time.

That distinction matters: a filmmaker can be interested and have a story without a studio authorizing development or production. Emmerich’s comments establish the first two things, not the latter.
What has Roland Emmerich said about the story?
His 2024 comments
In the 2024 interview, Emmerich said, “I have a story and everything. Trust me, I have a story.” He did not publicly lay out that story in detail in the reported exchange. His remark is evidence that he says he has a concept for a third film, not that a finished screenplay or approved plot exists.

The refugee-planet idea
In a 2021 anniversary interview with ComicBook.com, Emmerich said a third installment had been conceived while the team was making Independence Day: Resurgence. He described it as having more to do with the first film and mentioned a possible universe in which refugees live on a refugee planet: “we learned, more or less, that out there are a lot of refugees and they’re living on a refugee planet.”
This is a story idea Emmerich discussed, not a confirmed plot for a greenlit movie. The 2021 comments do not establish that the concept remains unchanged or would be used in a future production.

Why does Disney matter?
Independence Day is part of the 21st Century Fox library, which moved to Disney when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019. In his 2024 remarks, Emmerich identified speaking with Disney as a step he still needed to take. His interest alone therefore does not settle whether the rights-holder will pursue another film.

Where would a third film fit?
The franchise has two released films: Independence Day (1996) and Independence Day: Resurgence (2016). Resurgence continues the alien-invasion story and expands the fictional universe. Emmerich’s 2021 description suggested that a third installment might connect more closely to the first film, but there is no confirmed third-film story to place alongside the existing releases.
For context on his earlier uncertainty, Emmerich said in a 2017 interview that he did not know whether a third movie would happen and expressed interest in making original films. Those comments, reported by ComicBook.com, describe his position then; they do not override his later expression of interest, nor do the later remarks amount to studio commitment.

What to watch for in a genuine update
A meaningful change in status would be an announcement from Disney or another clear indication that the studio has authorized the project. A filmmaker’s enthusiasm or a previously discussed concept is not, on its own, confirmation. Until there is evidence of studio action, there is no reliable release date, casting news, production schedule, or confirmed directorial attachment to report.
