Andre Agassi’s on-court style changed in distinct phases: rock-and-roll hair and headbands, denim shorts, neon layers, and eventually patterned “pirate” styling. The clothes stood out against tennis’s traditional white, tucked-in look, but Agassi later described them less as fashion than as personal rebellion and a way to choose his own image.

1986: Rock-and-roll hair announces a new presence

Agassi arrived on the tennis scene at 16 in 1986. The International Tennis Hall of Fame recalls that TENNIS Magazine put the back of his head on its cover—a striking introduction built around his hair as much as his game. A 1995 Los Angeles Times retrospective remembered the teenager’s rock-and-roll hair and a ripped bedsheet worn as a bandanna. This early silhouette set him apart before the denim-and-neon outfits that later became associated with him.

1988 US Open: denim shorts challenge tennis convention

Agassi’s denim-look shorts at the 1988 US Open made the contrast with conventional tennis clothing impossible to miss. Tennis was commonly associated with white outfits and shirts tucked in; the shorts broke sharply with that expectation. The Los Angeles Times reported that officials consulted the rule books over what he wore. Later accounts identify the shorts as a signature Agassi look.

Agassi explained the appeal to Vogue in 2025: “For me, if it bothered the establishment, I was into it.” He also recalled that tennis had not seen many players wearing anything but white with tucked-in shirts. In the same interview, he put the look in perspective: “My clothes weren’t considered fashion at the time. I was just called a punk.”

1990 French Open: Challenge Court turns the outfit into a system

By 1990, the look was no longer one unusual garment. Nike’s Challenge Court collection paired acid-wash denim shorts with vivid Lycra tights—yellow, pink, or purple—and loose geometric or printed zip-front tops. Coordinated shoes and a wide headband over Agassi’s mullet completed the silhouette.

At the French Open, the outfit included hot-lava-colored tights beneath dark denim shorts, a matching lava-print top, and a pink headband. Tennis.com identifies the shoes as Nike Air Tech Challenge 2. This French Open combination should not be confused with his different outfit at the US Open later that year.

1990 US Open: a separate mix of lime and graphics

At the 1990 US Open, Agassi’s outfit took another route: the Los Angeles Times described lime cycling shorts with a black, white, and lime shirt and a headband. A later Tennis.com retrospective also calls out green neon, skate-like graphics, and denim in his US Open wardrobe. It was another high-contrast look, but not the lava-print French Open outfit.

1995 Australian Open: the “pirate” look

Agassi’s style continued to evolve beyond denim and neon. At the 1995 Australian Open, Tennis.com describes baggy patterned shorts, a loose white-and-burgundy-striped shirt, a matching bandana, a hoop earring, and a goatee. The combination earned the nickname “pirate look”—a different kind of statement from the bright Challenge Court layers.

His clothes were personal choices, not simply a fashion campaign

Agassi’s later explanations give the outfits a more complicated meaning than “dressing to be noticed.” In a quotation reproduced by Tennis.com in 2020, he described feeling conflict and resentment, and said that what he wore was something he could choose and take ownership of. He characterized that choice as taking an anti-establishment path. Speaking to Vogue in 2025, he likewise described the clothing as part of a rebellious phase and said he no longer misses his mullet.

There was also a commercial relationship with Nike, but the record supports specific examples rather than a blanket claim about how every outfit was designed. The 1995 Los Angeles Times reported that Agassi participated in clothing decisions with Nike. It also described one “Tennis Sucks” outfit that he stopped wearing after Nike made it available in stores, according to a Nike spokeswoman. That reported episode does not establish a general rule for his other looks.

2020: Nike and Agassi revisit Challenge Court

Nike and Agassi revisited Challenge Court for a throwback release in 2020, marking 30 years since the collection’s original era. NikeCourt Design Director Abby Swancutt said the historical collection’s pieces still resonated. The release documents a revival at that time; it does not establish current availability.

Why Agassi’s style remains distinctive

Agassi’s visual legacy is not one outfit but a sequence: hair and headbands first, then denim against tennis’s white-clothing convention, coordinated neon and printed layers, and finally the patterned 1995 look. The photos capture how consistently he used silhouette, color, and accessories to make a tennis kit feel individual. His own account adds an important qualification: he was choosing a personal form of rebellion, not necessarily setting out to make “fashion.”
