Youn Yuh-jung said Sunja’s “strength and determination to survive” was what drew her to the role in Pachinko. The television adaptation follows a Korean family across generations, tracing migration, hardship, belonging and discrimination through Sunja’s life and the lives of her descendants.
What Youn Yuh-jung meant by Sunja’s strength
In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly and syndicated by Yahoo on April 8, 2022, Youn described Sunja as having “strength and determination to survive.” She presented that quality as the reason she was inspired to take the role. In a separate interview, she put it this way: “This character has strength and determination to survive, and that drew me in,” SlashFilm reported on April 1, 2022.

The phrase is Youn’s description of a character, not a claim that resilience alone defines the series. Sunja’s story is situated within the pressures of migration and discrimination, while the wider family narrative also considers home, identity and what later generations inherit.
Sunja’s story within the family saga
Pachinko adapts Min Jin Lee’s 2017 novel of the same name. As Scroll.in reported on March 17, 2022, the story follows four generations of a Korean family. Sunja’s move from Korea to Japan unfolds against the history of Japan’s annexation of Korea in 1910; in Japan, she faces poverty and discrimination.

The narrative also reaches into the 1980s, where Sunja’s grandson Solomon pursues advancement in the corporate world as his family confronts its past. This shift in generation and setting broadens the story beyond one person’s struggle: survival is tied to the family’s movement between places and to the memories and experiences carried forward.
