In-N-Out’s “secret menu” is better understood as a menu of customer-requested customizations. The chain itself calls it a “not-so-secret menu” and officially documents six core options: Double-Meat, 3×3, 4×4, Grilled Cheese, Protein Style, and Animal Style. Other famous orders—including the Flying Dutchman, Animal Style fries, Neapolitan shakes, and Roadkill Fries—are widely associated with In-N-Out, but are not all presented as formal items on the company’s current official list.

The safest approach is to order the regular menu item first, then state the modification: “Double-Double, Animal Style,” “Cheeseburger, Protein Style,” or “3×3 with grilled onions.” For less standardized names, describe the ingredients instead of relying on the nickname.

What is actually on In-N-Out’s secret menu?

There is no separate hidden menu that every In-N-Out restaurant is required to display. In-N-Out’s own “not-so-secret menu” describes preparations customers can request using the chain’s regular ingredients. That distinction matters: the six options below are officially documented, while many internet-famous combinations are best treated as informal ordering language.

The six official not-so-secret menu options

1. Double-Meat

A Double-Meat has two 100% American beef patties, lettuce, tomato, spread, and a bun. It does not include cheese unless you request it. In practical terms, it is the meat-heavy counterpart to a Double-Double.

Order it as: “Double-Meat,” followed by any additional change, such as “Double-Meat with grilled onions.”

2. 3×3, or Triple Triple

A 3×3 contains three beef patties and three slices of American cheese, plus the standard lettuce, tomato, spread, optional onions, and bun. In-N-Out also identifies it as a Triple Triple.

Order it as: “3×3,” or “Triple Triple.” If you want a particular onion preparation, state that separately.

3. 4×4, Four by Four, or Quad Quad

A 4×4 contains four beef patties and four slices of American cheese with the usual burger components. The alternate names are Four by Four and Quad Quad.

Order it as: “4×4.” It is unnecessary—and potentially misleading—to describe it as the universally guaranteed maximum at every location. Larger combinations have circulated in fan communities, but the officially documented option is the 4×4.

4. Grilled Cheese

In-N-Out’s Grilled Cheese is a bun-based sandwich with two slices of melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, spread, and optional onions. It contains no beef patty.

Order it as: “Grilled Cheese,” then specify onions or other changes if needed. It is vegetarian by its listed ingredients, but it is not automatically suitable for every dietary restriction or allergy; see the safety notes below.

5. Protein Style

Protein Style replaces the bun with hand-leafed lettuce. It can be requested with several burgers, including the Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Double-Meat, and Double-Double.

Order it as: “Double-Double, Protein Style,” or “Cheeseburger, Protein Style.” The phrase means bun replaced with lettuce; it does not mean that the burger becomes low-calorie, low-fat, low-sodium, gluten-free, or automatically keto.

In-N-Out’s nutrition information separately lists Protein Style versions. The change can substantially reduce carbohydrates compared with a bun, but a Protein Style Double-Double still contains the beef, cheese, fat, cholesterol, and sodium associated with the rest of the sandwich.

6. Animal Style

Animal Style is the best-known In-N-Out customization. The beef patty is cooked with mustard, and the burger includes pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions in addition to its normal ingredients.

Order it as: “Double-Double, Animal Style.” If you want a different onion preparation, no pickles, or no standard ingredient, say so separately. For example: “Double-Double, Animal Style, no pickles, grilled onions.”

Popular In-N-Out orders that are less formally documented

These names are useful, but they should not be presented as guaranteed, centrally standardized menu buttons. If an employee does not recognize a nickname, give the ingredient description.

Flying Dutchman

A Flying Dutchman is widely described as two beef patties with two slices of melted American cheese and no bun or other standard burger components. It is a familiar customer order, but it does not appear among the six items on the current official “not-so-secret menu” page.

Best wording: “Two beef patties with two slices of cheese, no bun, please.” That explanation is clearer than relying on the name alone.

Animal Style fries

Animal Style fries are commonly described as fries topped with melted American cheese, spread, and grilled onions. They are a widely recognized part of In-N-Out secret-menu culture, although the official page specifically documents Animal Style as a burger preparation rather than listing a separate fries entry.

These fries can be messy because the toppings are layered over the fries. If you want an ingredient omitted or changed, state that directly.

Best wording: “Fries with cheese, spread, and grilled onions,” or “Animal Style fries,” followed by any exclusions.

Cheese fries

Cheese fries generally means fries topped with melted American cheese. This is a straightforward customization of the regular fries, but it is not one of the six highlighted entries on the official not-so-secret menu page.

Best wording: “Fries with melted cheese.”

Neapolitan shake

A Neapolitan shake combines chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. In-N-Out’s standard shake flavors are chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla, and the company describes its shakes as being made with real ice cream. The mixed-flavor order is widely documented by third-party guides but is not included in the official page’s six-item excerpt.

Best wording: “A shake with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry,” rather than assuming every location uses the name Neapolitan.

Root beer float, Arnold Palmer, and Lemon-Up

These names are commonly associated with In-N-Out drink customizations:

  • Root beer float: root beer combined with ice cream.
  • Arnold Palmer: iced tea combined with lemonade.
  • Lemon-Up: lemonade combined with a lemon-lime soda.

Because these combinations are less central to the company’s official menu documentation, describe the component beverages when ordering. Availability and naming may not be identical at every restaurant.

Roadkill Fries

Roadkill Fries are an internet-famous combination, but descriptions vary. Some versions involve Animal Style fries with a beef patty or a Flying Dutchman-style component. Because there is no single dependable definition, this is one of the least reliable secret-menu names.

  • Unique gift: Fun gift for teenagers, best friends, wife, women, boys, sons, husbands, Christmas, holidays, Thanksgiving, housewarming celebrations and other occasions, this vintage metal bar sign is a great gift for anyone

If you want to attempt the combination, explain exactly what you mean. Do not assume that “Roadkill Fries” refers to the same preparation at every location.

Tomato Wrap or Tomato Style

A tomato-wrapped burger has appeared in food-media coverage as an unusual In-N-Out customization. It is obscure and disputed rather than a dependable standard order, so it should not be presented alongside the official six.

How to order without confusion

  1. Start with the base item. Say “Hamburger,” “Cheeseburger,” “Double-Double,” “3×3,” or another recognizable menu item.
  2. Add the customization. For example: “Double-Double, Animal Style” or “Cheeseburger, Protein Style.”
  3. State exclusions separately. Say “no pickles,” “no tomato,” or “no spread” rather than expecting a nickname to communicate every change.
  4. Describe unofficial combinations. For a Flying Dutchman, say “two patties, two slices of cheese, no bun.” For cheese fries, say “fries with melted cheese.”
  5. Listen for clarification. These preparations use the same limited ingredient system as the regular menu, but unofficial names are not guaranteed to be interpreted identically at every restaurant.

Nutrition: what the customizations do—and do not—mean

Protein Style is the most frequently misunderstood option. Replacing a bun with lettuce changes the carbohydrate content, but it does not remove the burger’s beef, cheese, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, or sodium. A Protein Style Double-Double is still a substantial meal.

Animal Style can also add ingredients—mustard, pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions—rather than simply substituting one component. Larger burgers such as a 3×3 or 4×4 naturally contain more patties and cheese than a standard hamburger or cheeseburger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the most accurate numbers, consult In-N-Out’s current nutrition materials for the specific base item and modification. Do not infer that “bunless,” “grilled,” or “vegetarian” automatically means low-calorie, keto, vegan, or allergen-free.

Allergies and dietary restrictions

In-N-Out’s allergen information identifies known common allergens in items including buns, cheese, spread, shakes, creamers, and hot cocoa. The company also warns that it cannot guarantee food will not be exposed to an allergen.

  • Gluten: Protein Style removes the bun, but that alone is not a guarantee against gluten exposure or cross-contact.
  • Dairy: Cheese, shakes, and other ingredients may contain milk. A Grilled Cheese is not dairy-free.
  • Egg and other allergens: Check the current allergen chart for the exact ingredients in the selected item and modification.
  • Vegetarian: Grilled Cheese contains no beef by its listed description, but customers with strict requirements should ask about preparation and cross-contact.
  • Vegan: Do not assume that removing meat and cheese makes an order vegan; spread, buns, and preparation details require verification.

If you have a serious allergy, tell the restaurant clearly and consult the current company allergen information before ordering. No secret-menu nickname is a substitute for an ingredient and cross-contact discussion.

Why the menu works this way

In-N-Out says it does not freeze, pre-package, or microwave its food. The company describes its patties as fresh 100% USDA ground chuck, its fries as cut from fresh whole potatoes and cooked in sunflower oil, and its shakes as made with real ice cream. That limited, fresh ingredient system helps explain why many customizations are possible without requiring a separate hidden kitchen menu.

In-N-Out remains family-owned and says its restaurants are not franchised. That corporate structure does not mean every unofficial nickname is formally standardized; it simply provides context for a chain built around a relatively consistent set of ingredients and preparations.

Where you can find In-N-Out

As reported in the company’s current materials, In-N-Out operates restaurants in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, and Tennessee. The company’s 2026 press material also says a Twin Falls, Idaho, restaurant was scheduled to begin service on July 24, 2026. Because openings, hours, and local availability can change, use the official location finder before making a trip.

There is no nationally confirmed price list for these customizations in this guide. Prices can vary by location, so check the restaurant’s current menu or ordering channel rather than relying on an old secret-menu chart.

What should a first-time visitor order?

For the classic introduction, try a Double-Double Animal Style. It demonstrates the chain’s signature mustard-cooked patty, pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions without requiring an obscure nickname.

If you want a bunless version, order a Double-Double Protein Style. If you want a meat-free sandwich, choose a Grilled Cheese. For a larger appetite, a 3×3 or 4×4 is officially documented; for everything else, ingredient-level ordering is the most reliable path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does In-N-Out have a real secret menu?

In-N-Out calls it a “not-so-secret menu.” The company officially documents six customizations, but it does not present every internet-famous combination as a formal menu item available under the same name at every restaurant.

What is the most popular In-N-Out secret-menu order?

The Double-Double Animal Style is one of the best-known orders. It adds mustard-cooked patties, pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions to the burger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Protein Style healthy or keto?

Protein Style replaces the bun with lettuce and can substantially reduce carbohydrates, but it does not automatically make the meal low-calorie, low-fat, low-sodium, gluten-free, or keto. Check the ingredients and nutrition for the complete order.

Is the Flying Dutchman officially on the In-N-Out menu?

It is a widely recognized customer order consisting generally of two patties and two cheese slices without a bun, but it is not included on the current official six-item not-so-secret menu list. Describe the ingredients if the name is not understood.

Are Animal Style fries officially listed?

Animal Style fries are a popular custom order of fries with cheese, spread, and grilled onions. They are widely associated with In-N-Out, but the official page retrieved for this guide specifically documents Animal Style as a burger preparation rather than as a separate fries entry.

The Bottom Line

The reliable formula is simple: order the base item first, then name the customization. Choose Double-Double Animal Style for the classic experience, Protein Style for a lettuce-wrapped burger, or Grilled Cheese for a meat-free option. Treat names such as Flying Dutchman and Roadkill Fries as informal shorthand, and explain their ingredients whenever there is any doubt.
