On January 25, 2021, IMVU Inc. announced more than $35 million in strategic investment and a reorganization under the parent-company name Together Labs. The change did not replace the IMVU platform: IMVU remained its established avatar-based social product, while Together Labs positioned itself to develop additional social and gaming businesses.
What changed when IMVU became Together Labs?
Two events were announced together: a corporate reorganization and a financing round. IMVU Inc. adopted Together Labs as its parent-company identity; IMVU continued as the flagship consumer platform beneath it. In other words, “relaunch” referred to the company’s broader structure and ambitions, not the disappearance of the IMVU product. Together Labs’ announcement and contemporary GamesBeat coverage describe that distinction.
The company’s January 25 announcement said it had secured more than $35 million. That is more precise than the widely used “$35 million” shorthand; the exact amount above that threshold was not stated. The company did not disclose a valuation. TechCrunch’s report also noted that valuation was not disclosed.
Who invested, and what was the money meant to support?
The named investors were Structural Capital and NetEase, along with other investors whose identities were not fully listed in the company announcement. The available reporting does not establish that NetEase led the round, so it is best described as a participant rather than the lead investor.

Together Labs described the capital as growth financing for product development and strategic initiatives across IMVU and its other businesses. The stated plan included developing WithMe and expanding products built around social interaction and peer-to-peer economies. CEO Daren Tsui characterized the funding as capital to pursue product development more aggressively. The company did not publish a term sheet, dilution details, or board changes.
For context, TechCrunch reported that IMVU had raised more than $77 million across five rounds before this financing; GamesBeat separately reported $77 million in prior funding and said the last earlier raise was in 2008. Those are historical media-reported totals, not a disclosed or independently audited cap table.

Why did NetEase’s participation matter?
NetEase was more than a financial name in the announcement: its experience in game development and large-scale online services was presented as strategically useful. TechCrunch reported that IMVU saw NetEase’s game-development, engineering, and international-market capabilities as complementary to its social-platform business. The announcement framed the relationship as an opportunity to combine those strengths, not as a disclosed acquisition or transfer of control.
What made IMVU the foundation of the plan?
IMVU was an avatar-based social platform where people could customize avatars, visit virtual rooms and destinations, chat, join interest-based communities, and buy or create digital goods. Fashion and music were among the interests around which communities formed. The creator marketplace was central to the business case: users supplied much of the catalog that made the virtual world feel populated and gave participants goods to trade.

Figures published at the time describe IMVU’s scale in 2020 and early 2021, not its current audience. The company said it had more than 7 million monthly active users in 2020, roughly 50 million community-created items, and about 400,000 new products created each month. TechCrunch reported that IMVU operated in more than 140 countries. GamesBeat cited about 14 billion IMVU Credits exchanged monthly and approximately 27.5 million monthly unique transactions. These historical company or interview figures indicate the size of the economy Together Labs was trying to extend; they should not be read as 2026 metrics.
How did VCOIN fit into the virtual economy?
IMVU Credits were the platform’s existing virtual currency, used within its marketplace. VCOIN was a separate digital asset announced on January 13, 2021, intended to let users buy, gift, hold, earn, and transfer value beyond the IMVU platform. The company’s launch announcement described VCOIN as an ERC-20 token built on Ethereum and outlined a mechanism for transferring it off-platform, with possible conversion to fiat under the company’s rules.

That distinction mattered to Together Labs’ creator-economy strategy: IMVU Credits supported the established in-platform goods economy, while VCOIN was intended to make value more portable. The announcement does not establish current VCOIN availability, withdrawal rules, fees, eligibility, or geographic restrictions. The company’s reference to SEC staff no-action relief should not be recast as “SEC approval”: no-action relief is a narrower regulatory posture, not a general endorsement or guarantee that an asset is safe.

WithMe Entertainment was a planned mobile platform, described in the funding announcement as in development, for shared virtual experiences and user-generated games. Proposed activities included trivia, escape-room-style challenges, collaborative drawing, and watching online video together. GamesBeat reported that creators would be able to build games using scripting and a 3D engine, and that the division was aimed at users roughly 13 to 17 years old.

That age target makes safety, privacy, moderation, parental controls, and monetization especially relevant questions. The contemporary announcement and coverage explain the concept, but do not resolve those questions or establish that WithMe launched. It was an intended expansion, not a product readers should assume became an operating service.
What is established now—and what is not?
Together Labs’ company page continues to describe it as the company behind IMVU and presents IMVU as its principal social-metaverse platform. That supports the basic corporate distinction: Together Labs is the company, and IMVU is its established platform. The available material does not establish the present operating status or commercial terms of every initiative announced in 2021, particularly WithMe and VCOIN.
