How to analyse an isiXhosa poem
A strong response links form and language to what the poem communicates. Work through each poem in a consistent order, and support interpretations with details from its lines.
- Identify the speaker and situation. Ask who is speaking, who or what is being addressed, and what is happening or being remembered.
- Map the structure. Mark the lines and stanzas. Notice where an idea changes, develops or is emphasised.
- Listen for sound and repetition. Find repeated words or phrases and sound patterns. Explain what they stress or how they shape rhythm and mood.
- Interpret figurative language and imagery. Identify figures of speech and sensory images, then explain the associations they create in context.
- Describe the mood and language. Use specific word choices and sound or image patterns to justify the mood you identify.
- Connect technique to theme. Consider the poem’s personal, social, cultural, political or educational concerns. Make the connection through textual evidence rather than treating the theme as a label.
- Practise an exam response. Answer a focused question in a short paragraph: state your interpretation, cite a relevant feature or detail, and explain how it supports your answer.
The Western Cape Education Department’s 2025 Grade 7 isiXhosa guide offers a useful introductory vocabulary for discussing poetry: lines, stanzas, rhythm, figures of speech, imagery, sound devices, language and mood. It also distinguishes a written poet (imbongi yosiba), who researches and writes, from a traditional or oral poet (imbongi yomthonyama), who performs from emotion and praises people, leaders, animals, events or valued things. This is a general teaching framework, not a claim that every poem in the Grade 12 collection uses the same mode.
