For a static live-stream overlay that needs transparent areas, start with PNG. Use JPEG for many photographic backgrounds, and choose a lossless format such as PNG for logos, text, screenshots, and other crisp graphics. For an animated overlay with transparency, Elgato recommends WEBM for its OBS workflow—but check that your streaming software supports the format for the source you plan to use.
An overlay’s file format is separate from the codec and settings used to send your live video. Choose the graphic format for the asset; configure video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate independently.
Choose a format for the graphic you are adding
| Asset or requirement | Good starting choice | Why and what to check |
|---|---|---|
| Static overlay with see-through areas, such as a webcam frame, logo bar, or sponsor badge | PNG | PNG supports alpha transparency and lossless image data. Elgato’s OBS overlay guidance says static overlays should be PNG to maintain transparency. |
| Animated overlay that needs transparency | WEBM, if the target application accepts it for that source | Elgato recommends WEBM for animated transparent overlays in its described workflow. This is application-specific advice, not a guarantee that every streaming tool supports the same file or playback behavior. |
| Photograph or photo-like background without transparent areas | JPEG | JPEG’s lossy compression is often a practical trade-off for continuous-tone photographs. Avoid it when fine edges or transparency must remain intact. |
| Logo, text card, diagram, screenshot, or pixel art | PNG or another lossless format | Sharp edges and small text can reveal lossy compression as blur or colored fringes. PNG is a widely supported lossless option. |
| Smaller modern still image, or an asset that needs transparency or animation | WebP, after checking compatibility | IETF RFC 9649 defines lossy and lossless WebP modes, including transparency and animation support. That does not mean every streaming application accepts WebP for every source type. |
There is no universal best format: consider transparency, whether the asset is photographic or edge-heavy, file size, animation, compatibility with the exact software feature, and how the graphic will be scaled or cropped.
PNG, JPEG, WebP, and WEBM: the practical differences
PNG preserves transparency and crisp edges
PNG is the straightforward choice for a static overlay when parts of the image must remain see-through. It also avoids the lossy artifacts that can make text, thin lines, and logos look fuzzy. JPEG does not support an alpha channel, so it cannot preserve transparent overlay regions.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
JPEG suits many photographs
Photographs usually contain smooth variations in color and tone, which can tolerate some lossy compression. JPEG may therefore be a useful choice for a non-transparent photo background. If the image includes small text, sharp borders, or a logo, inspect the result at the size it will appear on stream before using it.
WebP may reduce still-image size, but support varies
WebP has both lossy and lossless modes and can support alpha transparency and animation under RFC 9649. The decisive question is whether your streaming software accepts WebP for the particular source you are adding. If support is unclear, export a PNG for a static transparent graphic and test it in the intended scene.

WEBM is the cited option for animated transparency
Elgato’s OBS overlay guide recommends WEBM for animated overlays that need transparency. Treat that as guidance for its described OBS use case, not a universal rule for all applications. Test the actual file in your chosen software, including whether it loops and whether transparency renders as intended.
Fit the graphic to the canvas without distortion
File extension does not determine aspect ratio. OBS Project describes 16:9 as common for major streaming platforms and gives 1920Ă—1080, 1280Ă—720, and 3840Ă—2160 as 16:9 examples in its 2021 guidance. A vertical or square scene may call for a different ratio.

Preserve the source image’s proportions when resizing. OBS warns that stretching content to fit can warp and distort it. Instead, scale proportionally, crop where appropriate, or fill unused canvas space with a background. Check the graphic in the composition at its final on-screen size; small text and thin details may become difficult to read after scaling.
Keep image format separate from live-video settings
A PNG overlay or JPEG background is a scene asset. It is not the format used to encode and transmit the live audiovisual program. YouTube’s live-stream guidance concerns delivery, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and protocol; those video decisions should be made separately from the export format of an overlay.

For a documentary stream, for example, a lossless PNG can keep a title card or lower-third sharp while the live program’s encoding settings are configured in the streaming tool. Changing that graphic to JPEG does not set the stream’s video codec or bitrate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check platform and source-specific requirements
Support and upload limits apply to particular features, not necessarily to every image source in the same platform. OneStream Live’s surfaced Studio guidance lists PNG, JPEG/JPG, or WebP, says PNG transparency is supported, and gives vendor-specific image recommendations; confirm the current requirements in the relevant OneStream feature before relying on them. Twitch’s extension discovery-image guidance says to avoid transparency in a PNG, but that concerns an extension discovery image—not a transparent scene overlay. Do not apply that rule to overlays generally.

Quick export and troubleshooting checklist
- Transparent regions appear solid: confirm the exported file has an alpha channel, use PNG for a static overlay, and check whether the application supports transparency for that source.
- Text or logo edges look blurry: export the graphic losslessly as PNG rather than using a lossy format; avoid enlarging a small source beyond its intended size.
- The overlay looks stretched: preserve its aspect ratio and scale proportionally. Crop or add a background instead of forcing mismatched dimensions to fill the canvas.
- An animated graphic does not play or loses transparency: verify the exact application’s supported animated-overlay workflow. Elgato recommends WEBM for the OBS use case it describes; test looping and transparency in your scene.
- A platform rejects an image: check the limit and accepted formats for that exact feature. A channel-page image, extension discovery image, and scene overlay can have different rules.
- The live video looks soft or buffers: investigate the video encoding, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and connection separately. The overlay’s PNG or JPEG extension does not control those settings.
