Illegal is a fictional Indian legal drama whose premise has more to offer than its execution. An idealistic lawyer is pulled into a rape accusation and an effort to help a woman convicted of multiple murders, and reviewers agree that the setup is appealing. They disagree on whether the cast and the thriller momentum carry the show past coincidence-heavy plotting and melodrama. If you want sustained courtroom tension, expect it only in bursts. If you want an ensemble soap that uses legal stakes as its engine, it is more reliable.
What Illegal is
Illegal, also listed as Illegal – Justice, Out of Order, is an Indian legal drama web series created and directed by Sahir Raza and written by Reeshu Nath. Its lead cast includes Neha Sharma, Akshay Oberoi, Kubbra Sait, Piyush Mishra and Satyadeep Mishra. A Wikipedia series reference page, last edited April 4, 2025, lists Hindi and English as its languages and records the first release as May 12, 2020. Those compiled production details come from a secondary reference rather than from the makers, so treat them as useful context rather than primary confirmation.

The premise and the first season
The first season follows Niharika Singh, an idealistic lawyer who joins a Delhi firm headed by Janardhan Jaitley. She is drawn into a case involving a rape accusation and a separate effort to help Meher Salam, a woman convicted of multiple murders. Those cases do not stay in the courtroom. They intersect with Niharika’s family and romantic relationships, and with the interests of people working inside the firm.

That structure is the show’s central design choice. The legal matters are meant to expose personal and political self-interest, so the office and the family are not background. They are where the plot’s pressure is applied. Whether that choice reads as incisive or contrived is the question that divides the reviews.
How the two main reviews read it
Scroll: Nandini Ramnath, May 12, 2020
Nandini Ramnath’s review for Scroll uses the headline “‘Illegal’ web series review: A soap opera in lawyer’s robes.” It points to heightened plotting, coincidences, political opportunism and entangled personal relationships. It is an opinionated review rather than a neutral account. It praises parts of the ensemble, particularly Satyadeep Mishra, Parul Gulati and Kubbra Sait, and describes Neha Sharma as committed to Niharika’s journey. Ramnath’s closing line on the theme is: “the ones who claim to be legal are the ones who are actually illegal.” That is reviewer framing about the show’s characters and plot, not a verified statement about the justice system.

India Today: Jyoti Kanyal, May 11, 2020
Jyoti Kanyal’s review for India Today, headlined “Illegal review: Piyush Mishra and Neha Sharma’s new web series is an ill-made legal drama,” agrees that the premise is appealing. Kanyal’s verdict is that “what goes against the show is the poor direction and writing.” The review cites low-energy early episodes and too many interwoven plots, and it singles out Satyadeep Mishra’s performance as the positive exception. The review’s date is one day before the reference page’s first-release date, and the sources do not establish whether it was written after a press screening or after streaming began.
Taken together, the two reviews are a contrasting pair rather than a consensus. Both identify the same strength, a serious premise, and both see the same risk, plotting that outruns its own logic.

Four questions that decide the verdict
Does the premise hold together?
The show’s ambition is to connect legal cases to the people who benefit from or exploit them. That gives the first season a clear theme. The difficulty is that the connections often depend on coincidence, so the theme reads as something the plot announces rather than something it earns. Viewers who accept a heightened, soap-like world will find the link between cases and characters satisfying. Viewers who want the legal stakes to feel grounded will find the same links implausible.
Courtroom tension or personal melodrama?
Momentum in Illegal comes from family, romance and office rivalries at least as much as from legal conflict. For a legal drama, that is the key trade-off. The personal storylines keep episodes moving, but they can push the courtroom material into the background at moments when a reader might expect it to lead.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Which performances carry the writing?
Both reviews agree that the ensemble is the show’s most persuasive asset, though they assign credit differently. Satyadeep Mishra is singled out positively by both Ramnath and Kanyal. Kubbra Sait and Parul Gulati receive praise in the Scroll review. Neha Sharma is treated more kindly by Ramnath, who sees her as committed to the role, than by Kanyal, who names her in the headline but not as the reason the show works. Piyush Mishra is credited in the cast list and in the India Today headline, and the reviews do not offer a detailed assessment of his character in the way they do for others.
Does the pacing hold across all episodes?
India Today criticizes slow early episodes and crowded storylines. Scroll describes the series as overheated and coincidence-driven. These are compatible criticisms: a show that rushes to the next twist can feel both overworked and sluggish, depending on the episode. Viewers who want to judge pacing fairly should give the first two or three episodes a complete viewing before deciding.

Is the legal content reliable?
Illegal is fiction, and the sources reviewed here do not establish that its depiction of Indian law is accurate. Do not use it as a guide to criminal procedure, rape trials, capital punishment or professional ethics for lawyers. The show’s storylines dramatize these subjects for entertainment, and the reviews assess them as drama, not as legal analysis.
Where to watch
A JustWatch India listing, checked September 28, 2026, shows all three seasons streaming on JioHotstar. That is a dated third-party listing for India only. It does not establish availability in other countries or guarantee the current catalogue, so confirm the title on JioHotstar directly before you plan to watch.
Is it worth your time?
The verdict is mixed, and the answer depends on what you want from the show.
- Watch it if you enjoy ensemble soap operas and do not mind coincidence as a plot device. The personal entanglements are the show’s main draw.
- Watch it if you are interested in how a fiction series can frame rape, murder and political influence through a law firm, and you are prepared to read those storylines critically.
- Skip it if you want a tightly built legal thriller where courtroom logic drives each episode.
- Skip it if you need the legal material to be accurate, since the sources do not establish that it is.
Expect a series with a strong premise, a cast that works hardest in its best scenes, and enough twists to keep you watching while you decide whether you believe them.
