IGN layoffs reported on September 14, 2026 affected multiple departments, but the total number of people cut has not been established. The IGN Creators Guild said four union members and many additional employees were laid off, and said the company attributed the cuts to a Ziff Davis cost-cutting mandate. That explanation comes from the union; no direct company statement about this specific round appears in the reporting cited here.
What happened at IGN?
Kotaku reported on September 14, 2026 that layoffs affected multiple IGN departments. Its report named video hosts Brian Altano and Seth Macy and said the scale of the cuts was not yet clear. The following day, Kotaku published a statement from the IGN Creators Guild describing four union members and many more people across the organization as laid off.
The Guild said producers, editors, hosts, and workers in other roles were affected. Its statement characterized the cuts as a loss of colleagues who had contributed years to IGN; that account does not provide a complete company-confirmed headcount.
Who has announced a departure, and when?
Layoff reporting dates and employees’ stated final dates are different. Brian Altano said he had worked at IGN for 17.5 years and that October 2, 2026 would be his last day. Max Scoville said he would no longer be employed by IGN starting in November 2026. These departure timelines were reported by Kotaku on September 15; they do not change the fact that the number of people affected by the September cuts remains unknown.

Why were IGN staff laid off?
The IGN Creators Guild said the company told it the cuts stemmed from a Ziff Davis cost-cutting mandate. The union called the news a surprise, saying, “We were blindsided by the layoff of four union members and many more people across the organization who contributed years of their careers to making IGN an unparalleled voice in games and entertainment.” Kotaku reported that IGN did not immediately respond to its request for comment. The cited material does not include a direct public company explanation of this specific round, so the union’s account is the available attribution for the stated rationale.
Kotaku said remote-work status and willingness to relocate might have influenced some decisions. That was presented as a possibility, not a confirmed company-wide policy or the sole reason for the layoffs.

What do Ziff Davis’s financial results show?
Ziff Davis’s August 6, 2026 second-quarter results provide company and segment context, not IGN-specific figures or proof of why staff were cut.
| Measure | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continuing-operations revenue | $286.7 million | $294.8 million | Ziff Davis overall, not IGN alone |
| Gaming & Entertainment segment revenue | $46.6 million | $46.2 million | The segment, not IGN alone |
| Goodwill impairment | $54.8 million | Not stated in the cited release excerpt | A Q2 2026 item reported by Ziff Davis |
The company reported a continuing-operations loss in Q2 2026, including the goodwill impairment. The release does not connect those results to the IGN layoffs. The segment’s revenue cannot be treated as IGN revenue, and the figures do not establish the internal rationale for the decisions.

Ziff Davis’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q describes a digital media and internet company with brands across gaming and entertainment and other areas. It says Ziff Davis completed the sale of its Connectivity business to Accenture on June 17, 2026, with proceeds intended for general corporate purposes and capital allocation. The filing does not link that transaction to IGN staffing decisions.

Kotaku reported a separate, smaller round of layoffs earlier in 2026, involving employees including engineers, days after IGN Live, the site’s annual Los Angeles event tied to Summer Game Fest. That earlier report establishes a sequence of cuts, but does not demonstrate that the same cause or criteria applied to the September layoffs.

What is still unknown?
- Total number affected: Kotaku said the scale was unclear. The Guild’s count of four union members plus an unquantified number of other workers is not a total.
- Company’s detailed rationale: The cost-cutting explanation is the Guild’s account of what it was told; the cited reporting says IGN did not immediately comment.
- Specific selection criteria: Possible effects of remote status or relocation were not confirmed as policy.
- Longer-term newsroom effects: The Guild said remaining workers faced added workload and anxiety, and expressed concern about changes to the work. Those are the union’s assessments; the eventual organizational effects are not established in the cited accounts.
- Other alleged causes: The cited reporting provides no evidence that a game publisher, platform holder, or particular editorial decision caused the layoffs.
