New York’s screen locations range from Central Park landmarks and a working Tribeca firehouse to a Queens park and Staten Island theater. This guide groups notable places by area, identifies the productions associated with them, and explains what visitors can actually see. It is a curated selection, not a complete inventory of every NYC filming location.
Central Park: several locations in one walk
Central Park has multiple distinct locations tied to films. Scenes were often staged or framed in ways that do not match the park today, so treat the screen image as a reference rather than a promise of an identical view.
Bethesda Terrace and Fountain
The Central Park Conservancy associates Bethesda Terrace with a musical sequence in Hair and the horse-carriage scene in Home Alone 2. In reality, carriages do not cross in front of Bethesda Fountain as they appear to do in the film. Central Park Conservancy’s film-location guide describes both associations and the difference between the scene and the park.
The Mall and Naumburg Bandshell
The Naumburg Bandshell, at the north end of the Mall, appears in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The Mall is also where Ted teaches Billy to ride a bike in Kramer vs. Kramer; the Conservancy notes that the landscape has changed since filming. Both locations are in the park’s central area. See the Conservancy’s location notes before setting out to match a particular frame.

#1 Best Overall
Bow Bridge
The Conservancy identifies Bow Bridge in Spider-Man 3 and Enchanted. It remains a popular place to visit, so a quiet or empty bridge in a movie is not a reliable guide to the crowds you may encounter.
Central Park Boathouse
The Boathouse is associated with When Harry Met Sally, including a lunch scene with Sally and her friends. The Conservancy says visitors can dine there with views of the Lake, but check the venue’s current operation and hours before planning a meal. The Conservancy’s article covers the location and scene.
Cherry Hill
Cherry Hill appears in Marathon Man and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. A swing set built for the latter film is not a permanent feature of the park, according to the Conservancy’s location guide.
Rank #2
Ghostbusters in Midtown and downtown
Ghostbusters draws on real New York places, but the locations serve different purposes and have different access rules. NYC Tourism names the New York Public Library, Columbia University, Ladder Company 8, and 55 Central Park West among the franchise’s real-world locations. Its Ghostbusters location guide identifies the library and campus landmarks; the city’s NYC as Seen on Screen guide calls 55 Central Park West “Spook Central.”
New York Public Library
The Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is the library location associated with the film. It is a real public institution, not a movie set; check the library’s visitor guidance and access conditions before visiting.
Columbia University
Columbia is another site identified in the film’s New York story. It is an active university campus, so follow current campus visitor rules and stay within areas open to visitors.
Rank #3
Ladder Company 8
The Tribeca firehouse is a working fire station associated with the Ghostbusters’ headquarters. It is not an attraction with guaranteed interior access. Visitors should keep the entrance clear and avoid interrupting emergency services.
55 Central Park West
This residential building is known to fans as Spook Central. View it respectfully from public areas; it is not open as a visitor attraction.
Midtown and the Upper West Side
Home Alone 2 landmarks
NYC Tourism connects Kevin’s New York visit in Home Alone 2 with the Plaza Hotel, Carnegie Hall, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, and FAO Schwarz. The fictional Duncan’s Toy Chest was based on FAO Schwarz, and the tourism guide also says the store was filmed there; there is no real Duncan’s Toy Chest to visit. The locations are spread across Manhattan, so they are better treated as separate stops than as one compact site. NYC Tourism’s guide to the film’s New York locations lists the associations.
Rank #4
American Museum of Natural History
The Upper West Side museum is the central setting for Night at the Museum, according to NYC Tourism. The film connection does not guarantee that a particular exhibit shown on screen is currently on view; check the museum’s current exhibition information separately. NYC Tourism’s museum-in-film guide identifies the location.
Downtown and the West Village
Friends and Sex and the City exteriors
NYC Tourism says visitors seek out West Village exteriors associated with Friends and Sex and the City. The familiar Friends apartment-building exterior is a street-facing view, not the interior apartment set; the building is residential. Enjoy it from the public sidewalk without blocking residents or businesses. NYC Tourism’s TV and movie locations guide discusses the neighborhood.
Katz’s Delicatessen
On Houston Street, Katz’s is associated with the “I’ll have what she’s having” scene in When Harry Met Sally. It is an operating business, so check its current hours and be considerate of customers when visiting. NYC Tourism lists the scene and location in its New York screen-location guide.

Queens and Staten Island
Corona Park, Queens
NYC Tourism places the climax of Men in Black at Corona Park and notes that the Guggenheim appears earlier in the film. The Guggenheim is in Manhattan; Corona Park is in Queens. These are separate stops, not one location. NYC Tourism’s film locations guide identifies both connections.
St. George Theatre and Wagner College, Staten Island
In School of Rock, the Battle of the Bands performance was filmed at St. George Theatre, while Wagner College served as the fictional Horace Green Prep School. They are distinct Staten Island locations; check venue and campus access before making either part of a visit. NYC Tourism documents the production sites in its New York movie-location guide.
Plan a self-guided walk or choose a tour
A self-guided visit gives you control over pace and which productions to follow. A guided tour can connect stops and provide production context, but a past announcement does not establish that a route is currently offered.
| Approach | Coverage and focus | Time and transit | Availability and access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-guided | Choose a neighborhood or production and visit the public-facing locations that interest you. | The City film office described two linked walking routes of approximately an hour each in a 2009 release; they began and ended near subway stops. This is historic route information, not confirmation of a current downloadable itinerary. Current city film-office resources are separate from visitor-access guidance. | Public streets and park paths differ from campuses, museums, businesses, and working firehouses. Check each site’s current rules and hours. |
| Guided | May connect more locations and add film or franchise context; route focus depends on the operator. | NYC Tourism’s March 2024 announcement described a private two-hour Ghostbusters tour. That dated announcement does not confirm current schedules or booking terms. Read the announcement. | Verify the operator’s current route, schedule, price, and whether stops include entry or are exterior-only before booking. |
For either approach, group stops geographically rather than trying to cover every borough in one outing. A street view, a park landmark, and entry to an institution are different experiences; confirm access close to your travel date. The city’s production-location and permitting resources are for filming activity, not a guarantee of visitor access.
