What happened to Ian Watkins at HMP Wakefield?
On 11 October 2025, prison staff at HMP Wakefield reported an assault on a prisoner. West Yorkshire Police said officers were called at 9:39 a.m.; Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said its Homicide and Major Enquiry Team was investigating and inquiries were continuing at the scene, according to ITV.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident at HMP Wakefield which took place this morning.” The initial statements identified the incident as an assault but did not publicly describe its circumstances.
What is known about the cause of death?
At the opening of the inquest in October 2025, the hearing was told Watkins died from a stab wound to the neck, according to Sky News. The hearing was opened and adjourned. That is an account heard at the inquest opening, not a final inquest conclusion.

What is the court status of the alleged killing?
Two prisoners were accused of killing Watkins and stood trial. On 22 May 2026, the jury was discharged for legal reasons, Sky News reported. A retrial was reported as scheduled for February, but the report did not state the year. The available update therefore establishes neither a verdict in that trial nor the outcome of any retrial.

Watkins was the lead singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets. The Associated Press reported that the band’s third album, Liberation Transmission, topped the UK charts in 2006: Associated Press.
In 2013, Watkins was sentenced to 29 years in prison, with a further six years on licence, after admitting a series of child sexual offences, ITV reported. Its account includes the attempted rape of a fan’s baby. These convictions and sentence are separate from the later allegations concerning the attack at HMP Wakefield.
