The line is an actor’s reported description of the story, not a full synopsis or a scene-by-scene account.
What Ian McKellen said about the story
In a February 17, 2026 report, MeriStation attributed the comment to McKellen speaking to The Times. The report reproduced his description: “It’s an adventure story, Aragorn trying to find Gollum with Gandalf directing operations from the sidelines.” The wording also appeared in a post dated February 15, 2026.
The remark suggests that Aragorn is the active searcher and Gandalf coordinates from a more removed position. It does not establish how much screen time either character has, detail the search’s events, or mean Gandalf is absent from the action. The original Times article was not directly available in the reporting reviewed here, so the quotation should be understood through MeriStation’s attribution.
Where the film fits in Middle-earth’s timeline
The Hunt for Gollum is set before The Fellowship of the Ring and centers on the search for Gollum. Aragorn is therefore in his earlier life as the ranger known as Strider, rather than the king he becomes later in Tolkien’s story. That context helps explain why later casting coverage uses the name Strider for the role McKellen referred to as Aragorn.

Variety’s April 15, 2026 report said Andy Serkis will direct and play Gollum/Sméagol, Ian McKellen will return as Gandalf, and Jamie Dornan will play Strider, later revealed as Aragorn in the novel. The report also named Elijah Wood as Frodo, Lee Pace as Thranduil, Kate Winslet as Marigol, and Leo Woodall as Halvard.
Variety reported a theatrical release date of December 17, 2027. That is the date in the cited trade report, not a guarantee against a later schedule change.

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced the project in 2024 as the first of two new Middle-earth feature films. The announcement named Serkis as director and star, and Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou as writers. Peter Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens were announced as producers.
These reports serve different purposes: the 2024 studio announcement established the project and creative attachments; McKellen’s reported February 2026 comment offered a concise indication of the characters’ roles in the story; and Variety’s April 2026 coverage supplied later casting and release-date details. The reported quote has not been presented as a separate studio-confirmed synopsis.
