Abhishek Bachchan gives the film a steady center as Arjun Sen, but its slow pace and spare setup will divide viewers: the silences can deepen its intimacy, while the story’s early stretches may feel too thin to support the emotional journey that follows.
What is I Want to Talk about?
Shoojit Sircar’s 2024 Hindi-language drama follows Arjun Sen, a confident advertising executive whose cancer diagnosis redirects his life. The film’s central concern is not simply whether he can endure illness; it is the relationship between Arjun and his daughter, Reya, and the distance between them.
That emphasis gives the story a more personal scale than a conventional tale of battling fate. The illness supplies the disruption, but fatherhood is the emotional center: how Arjun faces a radically changed future, and what his daughter means within it.
Does the quiet pace work?
I Want to Talk moves slowly and leaves room for pauses rather than pushing every moment toward a dramatic release. India Today’s Zinia Bandyopadhyay finds that restraint heartfelt, arguing that the pauses give viewers space to reflect. She describes “the silences intertwined in the narrative that can truly add the soul to a film.”

Catherine Bray’s Guardian review reaches a less favorable conclusion. She argues that the film spends too little time establishing Arjun before the diagnosis, leaving the setup too slight for the journey that follows. The difference between these responses points to the film’s main trade-off: its quietness can feel attentive and intimate, or underdeveloped, depending on how much grounding a viewer needs before the story turns inward.
How does Abhishek Bachchan’s performance fit the film?
As Arjun, Bachchan plays within the drama’s restrained register. Rather than relying on a constant display of anguish, the film’s approach asks the audience to attend to a father confronting illness and the altered terms of family life. That suits a story built around reflection and relationship, though viewers looking for a more forceful dramatic tempo may find the performance and the film’s overall mood too subdued.
What does the film say about fighting cancer?
The story’s survival language invites a critical question. Bray objects to framing cancer as a war to be won, because that metaphor can make survival sound like a measure of willpower and imply an unfair judgment about people who die of the disease. That is a concern raised in her review, not a universal account of how every viewer will interpret the film.
Arjun’s persistence belongs to his fictional story; it should not be treated as medical advice or a claim that determination controls a person’s outcome. The film’s most grounded emotional focus is the way illness changes his life and his relationship with Reya.
