I Swear is a British biographical comedy-drama about John Davidson, the Scottish Tourette syndrome activist. Written and directed by Kirk Jones, it stars Robert Aramayo as Davidson and follows his path from a difficult adolescence to advocacy. This is the 2025 Jones film, not the separate Chinese film with the same title.
What is I Swear about?
The film traces Davidson’s life after he is diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at 15. It depicts peer hostility, strain within his family and the obstacles he faces as an adult, before turning to his work to improve public understanding and acceptance of the condition.

Set in part in the 1990s, the story’s conflict is not only about symptoms: it also examines how stigma and exclusion shape Davidson’s experience. The film’s guiding idea is captured by Tommy Trotter’s line, “I don’t think Tourette’s is the problem.”
Is I Swear based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on the life of real Scottish activist John Davidson. It is a dramatized biography, not a documentary record: Kirk Jones made a significant alteration to Davidson’s life story, as reported by The Irish Times. Viewers should therefore distinguish the film’s dramatic construction from Davidson’s documented life.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the film portray Tourette syndrome?
I Swear combines comic warmth with scenes of prejudice, distress and violence. It includes involuntary vocal tics, including coprolalia. Coprolalia— involuntary utterance of socially unacceptable words or phrases—is experienced by some people with Tourette syndrome, not everyone. Such words are symptoms, not necessarily intentional statements or expressions of a person’s beliefs.
The distinction matters to the film’s awareness-raising aim: it asks viewers to consider how other people respond to tics, rather than treating involuntary speech as a deliberate provocation. The Associated Press describes both the vocal tics and physical assault depicted in the film.
Is I Swear suitable for children?
The Motion Picture Association rating listed by Rotten Tomatoes is R for “Some Violence|Language Throughout.” The rating and the film’s depictions of stigma, assault and involuntary offensive language make it worth checking against a child’s age and sensitivities before viewing.
