That balance between genre danger and character drama is deliberate. Showrunner and executive producer Ian McCulloch told SYFY Wire, in a report on official production notes, that the series was not intended to be only a “run-and-hide thriller”; he wanted viewers to care about the characters. The premise gives the family’s choices and conflicts room to matter alongside the threat.

How closely does the series follow Stinger?
Teacup is loosely based on Robert R. McCammon’s novel Stinger, not a close episode-by-episode adaptation. In a set-visit report, TV Insider described the novel as more than 600 pages and quoted McCulloch saying the series was “99.8% different” from the book. That percentage is the showrunner’s characterization, not an independently measured adaptation statistic; it signals how substantially the television story reworks its source.
