He had spent about four hours recording Gustave’s English voice, he recalled, and felt awkward accepting congratulations for the game’s success. His reported phrase was “total fraud”—though he also made clear he was thrilled for the team.
Why did Charlie Cox feel like a fraud?
At Washington State Summer Con, attendees praised Cox over the game’s success. He joked about the mismatch between that praise and the limited time he had spent recording his part: “People keep saying how amazing it is, and ‘congratulations,’ and I feel like a total fraud.” Windows Central reported the remark on June 23, 2025.

He quickly clarified the feeling was not resentment or criticism of the game. “But I’m so thrilled for the company, I’m so thrilled it did really well,” Cox said. The self-deprecation reflected his discomfort with being congratulated for a project in which, by his account, his own recording work was brief.
How long did Cox record, and had he played the game?
Cox recalled spending about four hours in the studio recording voice-over. That is his approximate recollection, not a published studio log. At the same June 2025 appearance, he said he had not played the game. That statement describes what he said at the time; it does not establish whether he has played it since.

Who does Charlie Cox voice in Expedition 33?
Cox voices Gustave in the English cast. The game’s official site describes Gustave as a resourceful engineer committed to protecting Lumière and fighting the Paintress. Cox’s voice role is established, but the available credits do not spell out a complete division of animation or motion-capture work for the character. Sandfall’s cast materials also credit Maxence Cazorla as a performer in the game, so Cox should not be described as the sole creator of Gustave’s entire performance.
How did Sandfall approach the casting?
Sandfall founder Guillaume Broche said in an Xbox Wire podcast interview that publisher Kepler Interactive helped initiate the approach to Cox and Andy Serkis. The studio and publisher discussed which performers might serve as the characters’ base voices; Broche said Cox and Serkis agreed quickly and asked many questions about the characters and world.

Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, Sandfall’s Lead Writer and Voice Producer, described the recording work positively in a PlayStation.Blog cast announcement dated October 16, 2024: “The actors were phenomenal to work with (and just all-around great people). We had a lot of fun during the recording sessions.” She also credited the cast with conveying the characters’ complexity, including lives shaped by loss.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released on April 24, 2025. GameSpot’s June 23, 2025 coverage lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X as platforms. Windows Central also reported a Game Pass access option in 2025. Current subscription inclusion, store listings, physical editions, and stock can change, so check the relevant platform’s current listing for the edition and region you want.
