Who was Hydeia Broadbent?
Broadbent was born in Las Vegas on June 14, 1984. Reports describe her as living with HIV from birth or since early childhood, but accounts distinguish that description from when her diagnosis became known: The Washington Post says she tested positive at age three and developed AIDS by age five, while the Associated Press reports her condition was not known until she became seriously ill at three. Her childhood included significant health challenges. Her public advocacy made her a prominent voice against stigma, but her story should not be reduced to an inspirational symbol or treated as representative of everyone living with HIV.
How did she become an HIV/AIDS activist?
National attention as a child
In 1992, seven-year-old Broadbent appeared on a Nickelodeon special with Magic Johnson, who had recently announced that he was HIV-positive. She told viewers, “I want people to know that we’re just normal people.” The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times report the line; The Washington Post describes the special and its impact.

She also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show as a child and spoke at the 1996 Republican National Convention. At the convention, she declared: “I am the next doctor. I am the next lawyer. I am the next Maya Angelou. I might even be the first woman president. I am the future, and I have AIDS.” The Washington Post reported the remarks. Her words placed a future of possibility beside a diagnosis that was often treated as a reason for fear or exclusion.
Advocacy into adulthood
Broadbent continued public education and advocacy as an adult, speaking about HIV awareness, prevention, and stigma. Reports associate her with the CDC’s Let’s Stop HIV Together campaign. Her father, Loren Broadbent, said she remained determined to spread hope and positivity through HIV/AIDS education despite the challenges she faced. Magic Johnson paid tribute to her for helping people understand that those with HIV and AIDS were everyday people who deserved respect. Anthony S. Fauci, the AIDS researcher and former NIAID director, told The Washington Post that a young woman born with HIV saying people with the condition were “normal” and “real” did much to dispel stigma.
How did Hydeia Broadbent die?
Broadbent died in Las Vegas on February 20, 2024, aged 39. The Associated Press cited the Clark County coroner’s office for the date and location. The reports reviewed did not establish a definitive cause of death. Her father told The Washington Post that he did not know the cause; he said she had suffered a heart attack and a possible stroke the previous September. Why her advocacy still matters
Broadbent’s insistence on ordinary dignity remains relevant because HIV-related disparities and stigma have not disappeared. The CDC figures cited by the Associated Press in 2024 recorded more than 36,000 new HIV infections in the United States in 2021, 7% fewer than in 2017. Black and African American people accounted for 40% of those 2021 infections while making up 12% of the U.S. population. These are historical figures for 2021, not current rates.
