Its “man-made disaster” framing is best understood as a description of the compounded catastrophe—not a claim that people caused the hurricane.
What is Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time about?
Directed by Traci A. Curry, the 2025 series was produced by Lightbox in association with Proximity Media. National Geographic presents it as a survivor-centered account built around eyewitness testimony from survivors, first responders and officials, alongside archival footage. That is the series’ stated approach, rather than an independent assessment of every event it depicts. National Geographic’s series page describes it as a historical record.
The five episodes follow a chronological arc: preparations and evacuation, flooding and rescue, the crisis at the Superdome, the troubled aftermath, and the longer process of displacement, return and rebuilding. The episode descriptions below reflect National Geographic’s published summaries. The official episode guide establishes the series’ scope and framing; historical claims about what failed are better grounded in NOAA and Army Corps accounts.
Episode guide
- “The Coming Storm” follows Katrina’s approach, residents’ preparations and evacuation. The series description characterizes the evacuation order as delayed.
- “Worst Case Scenario” turns to levee breaches, rapidly rising water, efforts to get people to safety and government shortcomings as presented by the series.
- “A Desperate Place” focuses on continuing rescue, people trapped by the flood, the Superdome and the media’s attention to looting.
- “Shoot to Kill” examines the aftermath, failed efforts to evacuate people, debate over the use of force, local rescue work, and reports of violence and militias targeting residents.
- “Wake Up Call” considers displacement, return, rebuilding and the city’s future two decades later.
Why does the title call Katrina a “man-made disaster”?
Katrina was a natural hazard. The “man-made” description refers to how human-built protections and decisions shaped the scale of the disaster—not to the storm’s origin. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center says storm surge overtopped and breached levees around metropolitan New Orleans. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ retrospective history reports 50 breaches in the regional Hurricane and Storm Damage Risk Reduction System and flooding across 80 percent of New Orleans. NOAA’s Katrina report and the Army Corps’ account of the levee breaches document the natural hazard and the failed protection system as distinct parts of the catastrophe.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those figures describe different things: the Corps’ 50 breaches refer to the regional system, while its 80 percent figure refers to the share of New Orleans that flooded. Neither figure, by itself, explains every death, evacuation decision or institutional responsibility.
What failed when New Orleans flooded?
The levee and flood-protection system did not prevent storm surge and flooding from reaching the city. The Army Corps says the Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET) was formed after Katrina to investigate system performance and infrastructure failures. It describes IPET as comprising more than 150 public- and private-sector scientists and engineers. That post-storm inquiry matters: the failure involved a system investigated across multiple mechanisms, not a single error that can be responsibly treated as the whole explanation.

Emergency response and evacuation are also central to the documentary’s account, especially in its episode descriptions of people trapped, rescue efforts and continuing evacuation problems. Those descriptions convey the series’ framing; they are not, on their own, a complete historical finding about the cause of each failure or its consequences.
How many people died in Katrina?
NOAA’s National Hurricane Center gives an approximate count of 1,000 deaths in Louisiana and 200 in Mississippi, plus seven in southern Florida, in the passage consulted. NOAA presents these as approximate figures; they should not be confused with the Corps’ measures of levee breaches or flooded area. NOAA’s report provides the cited state-by-state figures.

The series’ stated scope connects the immediate storm and flooding with rescue, public response and the consequences of displacement and rebuilding. Its executive producers, Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn of Lightbox, called it “a compelling, essential reexamination of systemic failure and the enduring consequences of decisions made before, during and after the levees broke” in National Geographic’s June 26, 2025 announcement. That quote is the producers’ description of their own series, not an independent verdict on its historical conclusions.
