In a PerthNow interview published 12 August 2024, they described why they applied and what made the season’s twist so appealing.
Who are Ondeane and Shelli?
PerthNow identified Ondeane as a 49-year-old from Baldivis and Shelli as a 61-year-old business owner from Dunsborough, in Western Australia’s South West. They are cousins, and Shelli was the one who suggested they apply. Ondeane, already a fan of the series, said she was happy to join her.

Ondeane told PerthNow she had 30 years’ experience as an investigator, including 20 years as a Naval Police investigator. Those are credentials she described in the interview; they are not independently verified employment records.
What was the bank-heist twist?
Season three opened with nine pairs taking part in a bank robbery staged for the game. The “Savings Bank of Ballarat” was fictional and set up by producers; the robbery was not a real crime. The fugitives then had to go off grid, evade the Hunters and reach an extraction point within 20 days. Network Ten’s official cast announcement says those who avoided capture kept the money they had taken.

- Factory sealed DVD
The season was promoted with a prize pool of up to $1 million. That was the announced premise, not evidence that Ondeane and Shelli won that amount. Carrying the cash was itself part of the difficulty: Ondeane said the prospect of having that much money on her while trying to evade capture made her want to take part even more.
Why did the cousins want to take part?
Ondeane was surprised by the twist
Although she was a fan of the show, Ondeane said the opening heist caught her off guard: “I was not prepared at all for the twist.” She described the combination of a fictional robbery, a large sum of cash and an escape attempt as a particularly tempting challenge.

Shelli relished the pursuit
Shelli said the pair intended to “outsmart, outwit and outlast the Hunters and the other teams,” with the prospect of money for those who made it to the end of Day 20. She called the experience “an absolute buzz” and compared it to playing “a real-life game of hide and seek / cops and robbers.” Partnering with her cousin was part of the appeal, too.
How did season three’s format come about?
In a 2024 report, TV Tonight connected the season’s staged-heist element to the UK series The Heist. The outlet quoted Endemol Shine Australia director of content Marty Benson saying, “We got inspired by that show and we’ve kind of combined the two ideas.” This is format context reported by TV Tonight, rather than a direct interview transcript reviewed here.
