Its story did not end when audiences tired of that persona. Hogan reinvented himself as the villainous Hollywood Hogan in WCW, before a separate reputational crisis in 2015 led WWE to terminate his contract.
What was Hulkamania?
Hulkamania was the fan culture and entertainment phenomenon organized around Hogan’s larger-than-life wrestling character. WWE’s profile describes a patriotic hero in trademark red and yellow, cheered by a devoted following known as Hulkamaniacs. The character’s familiar advice to “train, say your prayers and take your vitamins” offered fans an easy ritual to repeat and a simple idea to rally around.
The formula worked beyond the ring because the character was instantly recognizable. Television and celebrity appearances introduced Hogan to people who might not otherwise follow wrestling; rivalries and major events gave those viewers recurring stories to watch. WWE’s retrospective chronology documents those ingredients, though it does not measure how much each one independently contributed to Hogan’s popularity.
How did Hulk Hogan become famous?
The Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection
WWE dates its relationship with MTV to 1984, when the two helped create what became known as the Rock ’n’ Wrestling Connection. The MTV special The Brawl to End It All featured pop star Cyndi Lauper supporting wrestler Wendi Richter. WWE says the match drew record ratings for the fledgling network. The collaboration put wrestling into a pop-music setting and gave viewers a bridge into the sport through a familiar celebrity.

The crossover continued in 1985. Hogan and actor Mr. T headlined the first WrestleMania against Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff, while Lauper and Muhammad Ali were among the event’s celebrity participants. Hogan also became the first WWE Superstar to host Saturday Night Live. These appearances helped make him a recognizable entertainment figure, not just a wrestler known to an existing audience.
A character built for television and repetition
Hogan’s reach extended into other formats. WWE’s timeline records the 1985 debut of the Saturday-morning cartoon Hulk Hogan’s Rock ’n’ Wrestling, and says “Real American” appeared on the promotion’s first record, The Wrestling Album. The red-and-yellow look, patriotic framing and clear hero-villain conflicts made the character easy to identify across those settings.
Hogan also appeared as Thunderlips in Rocky III and on the cover of Sports Illustrated, according to the Associated Press. Those credits show how far his public profile reached beyond wrestling, even as the ring remained the stage for the character’s central stories.

Which moments defined Hulkamania’s peak?
WrestleMania I: a celebrity event
The 1985 WrestleMania paired Hogan with Mr. T against Piper and Orndorff, with celebrities including Lauper and Ali involved. The event brought together wrestling rivalries and mainstream entertainment in one highly visible spectacle. Rather than a single match creating Hulkamania on its own, it was part of a broader pattern: television promotion, celebrity attention and ongoing stories all reinforced one another.

WrestleMania III: Hogan and Andre the Giant
At WrestleMania III on March 29, 1987, Hogan bodyslammed Andre the Giant in one of the era’s defining images. WWE’s history gives the event’s attendance as 93,173; that is WWE’s announced figure, not an independently audited count. Hogan’s championship run ended in 1988 after four years, according to WWE’s chronology.
Other people helped shape the story around him. Vince McMahon was expanding the WWF nationally; Lauper and Mr. T brought crossover visibility; Piper became a major rival; Andre supplied the imposing opponent at WrestleMania III; and Randy Savage was first an ally, then an opponent. Hogan was the central figure, but the spectacle depended on a cast of recognizable collaborators and rivals.

How did Hulkamania change into Hollywood Hogan?
Hogan’s move to WCW in the mid-1990s led to a sharp reversal of his familiar hero role. WWE’s profile says he turned villain after sensing audiences were tiring of his heroism. In 1996, he turned on Savage, joined Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, and formed the New World Order, or nWo, according to the Los Angeles Times. As Hollywood Hogan, he traded the red-and-yellow hero image for an antagonistic persona aligned with the group.
This was a reinvention, not simply the disappearance of Hulkamania. The Los Angeles Times says WCW began beating WWE in ratings for the first time during this period and describes a wider wrestling hot streak. It reports that the boom lasted until 1998, when fans tired of the nWo. The paper estimates that wrestling drew around 13 million viewers per week during the boom; this is its estimate for the broader wrestling audience, not a Hogan-only audience or an official ratings total.

What caused Hulk Hogan’s fall from grace?
There are two different stories often folded into the phrase “fall of Hulkamania.” One is the changing popularity of a wrestling character and storyline; the other is the damage to Hogan’s public reputation after racist comments became public in 2015. They happened at different times and had different consequences.

A changing wrestling cycle
The original hero formula gave way to new storylines and a villainous reinvention in WCW. The nWo chapter itself was a major success within wrestling’s competitive boom before audience interest waned, as the Los Angeles Times recounts. That shift did not mean Hogan’s career ended when the original Hulkamania persona changed.
The 2015 reputational rupture
In July 2015, racist slurs from a recording became public. On August 5, WWE announced: “WWE terminated its contract with Terry Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan). WWE is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide.” The Los Angeles Times also reports that WWE removed Hogan from its Hall of Fame at the time. The termination followed the public comments; the Gawker privacy dispute was a separate matter.
Hogan sued Gawker over publication of a sex-tape clip. Biography.com reports that a Florida jury awarded him $140 million in March 2016, followed by a $31 million cash settlement in November 2016. Those figures describe distinct legal outcomes—the jury award and the later settlement—not one final damages figure.

How should Hulkamania’s rise and fall be understood?
Hulkamania’s rise came from the interaction of a simple, memorable character with a growing national platform and the spectacle of wrestling’s big events. Its evolution shows that the character could be rewritten: Hollywood Hogan reversed the original hero image and became central to a new WCW chapter. The later 2015 scandal was not merely another storyline turn; WWE’s public termination of Hogan’s contract marked a real break in his relationship with the company, following the release of racist comments.
Hogan died in July 2025, aged 71, the Associated Press reported. His pop-culture legacy therefore contains distinct chapters: a defining 1980s crossover phenomenon, a 1990s reinvention, and a later public rupture that changed how his career was viewed.
