When did Hulk Hogan die?
WWE announced on July 24, 2025, that Bollea had died at 71. The announcement did not give a cause. The Associated Press also reported his death that day and quoted Clearwater Police spokesperson Major Nate Burnside saying, “There were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity.” That was a statement about the initial response, not the later completed investigation.

What was Hulk Hogan’s cause of death?
On July 31, 2025, ABC News reported that Hogan’s cremation report listed acute myocardial infarction, commonly called a heart attack, as the cause of death. ABC said it obtained a copy of the report through the Pinellas County Forensic Science Center. The report also listed a history of atrial fibrillation and chronic lymphocytic leukemia; those medical-history details do not, by themselves, establish the cause.
What did Clearwater Police conclude?
In a report published June 7, 2026, WUSF said Clearwater Police had closed their investigation and confirmed Hogan died from natural causes. WUSF reported that the 72-page case report showed no indications of criminality or surgical complications in the medical records reviewed. This later police finding is consistent with the more specific cause listed in the cremation report: acute myocardial infarction.

WUSF also described a question raised in the case about a possible nerve injury. An occupational therapist’s speculation about that possibility was not based on firsthand knowledge of the surgery, according to WUSF; the reporting does not establish that surgery caused Hogan’s death.
Why was Hulk Hogan important to professional wrestling?
Hogan became one of wrestling’s most recognizable performers as WWE expanded its reach in the 1980s. WWE says the Hulkamania phenomenon helped the company achieve global recognition. The Associated Press described him as a central figure in wrestling’s shift into mass cultural entertainment.

WWE’s career figures illustrate his prominence in its history: the company credited him with five WWE Championships by the time he left in August 1993, a sixth WWE Championship in 2002, and eight WrestleMania main events. WWE also reported that WrestleMania III drew 93,173 fans to the Pontiac Silverdome. These are WWE’s career and event figures, not a measurement of his broader cultural impact.
After leaving WWE, Hogan joined WCW and became a leading figure in the New World Order storyline. WWE says his leadership of the group helped reignite sports entertainment’s popularity in the 1990s.

How did controversy shape Hogan’s legacy?
Hogan’s influence sits alongside a significant public controversy. The Associated Press reported that WWE cut ties with him in 2015 for three years after reports that he had used racial slurs. Hogan apologized, and WWE reinstated him in its Hall of Fame in 2018. His career is remembered both for his central role in wrestling’s growth and for the conduct that led to that break with the company.
