What Hugo Wentzel said about Jimmy Carter in 2023
FOX 5 Atlanta reported Wentzel’s comments on August 9, 2023, drawing on an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Wentzel, then 24 and recently eliminated from ABC’s Claim to Fame, said his grandfather was “pretty sick.” He described Jimmy as listening to audiobooks and wanting to keep busy, suggesting that he remained mentally engaged despite his serious illness. These were a grandson’s observations, not a clinical report.

What Wentzel said about Rosalynn Carter
Wentzel said Rosalynn sometimes forgot what was happening. He described it as remarkable “when she remembers, it’s amazing.” That was his account of family life, not a medical assessment. The Carter family had publicly shared her dementia diagnosis on May 30, 2023, as recorded in The Carter Center’s biography of Rosalynn Carter.

What happened after the 2023 update
The interview was not a current health briefing. Rosalynn Carter died on November 19, 2023, aged 96, according to The Carter Center’s announcement. Jimmy Carter died on December 29, 2024, aged 100; the Center confirmed his death in its announcement.
