Hugh Laurie’s confirmed Harry Potter role is as the voice of Albus Dumbledore in Audible’s new full-cast audiobook production—not in the HBO television series. The available reporting does not include a statement from Laurie about joining the franchise, so “breaks silence” is not supported.
What Hugh Laurie’s Harry Potter role is
The Associated Press reports that Laurie voices Albus Dumbledore in Audible’s new audio adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s seven-book series. The production is a full-cast audiobook, separate from both the films and the forthcoming HBO series. Associated Press coverage
Other cast members identified by AP include Riz Ahmed as Snape, Michelle Gomez as McGonagall and Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort; Cush Jumbo narrates. AP reports the first book is due on November 4, but its article does not establish the year, so that date should not be treated as a confirmed year-specific release date.
Who plays Dumbledore in the HBO series?
The official Harry Potter casting announcement names John Lithgow as Professor Dumbledore in the HBO Original Series. Laurie’s audiobook role does not make him a member of the television cast, nor does it indicate that he replaces Lithgow. Official HBO series casting announcement

Did Laurie “break silence” about joining Harry Potter?
The available AP report identifies Laurie’s audiobook role but does not quote him discussing it. The official HBO casting announcement identifies Lithgow as Dumbledore and does not connect Laurie to the series. The sources available here therefore do not establish what Laurie said, when he said it, or that he made a public statement about joining the franchise. The “breaks silence” claim should not be presented as fact.
