Hugh Jackman and Ella Beatty played the leads in Hannah Moscovitch’s drama Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, in which a professor and a student become involved. The staged relationship is fiction; it does not establish anything about Jackman’s private life or his relationship with Sutton Foster. Both documented Off-Broadway runs have ended.
What is the play about?
Moscovitch’s play centers on Jon, a professor, and Annie, his student. Jackman played Jon and Beatty played Annie in the documented New York production. The professor-student relationship and intimate moments, including a kiss described in press coverage, are part of the scripted drama—not evidence about the performers’ offstage relationships. The play’s rights-holder describes it as an 80-minute drama and offers the script for purchase or licensing: the rights-holder’s play page.
In a Playbill profile published May 28, 2025, Moscovitch said, “There are silences in our culture around women’s discomfort.” Read the Playbill profile.
What was reported about Jackman and Sutton Foster?
A May 4, 2025 PerthNow story connected the play’s intimate scenes to an alleged rough patch in Jackman and Foster’s relationship. Its framing relied on reporting and a quotation from an unnamed source; the story did not cite an on-record statement from Jackman, Foster, or a named representative. That report does not independently establish the couple’s relationship status, and the fictional scenes cannot verify a claim about their private lives. Read PerthNow’s report.
