Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness, described in contemporaneous coverage as former partners, issued a joint tribute praising Granger’s friendship, zest for life and commitment to family.
What happened to Bill Granger?
Granger’s family announced his death on social media. In the statement quoted by the Associated Press, they said: “A dedicated husband and father, Bill died peacefully in hospital with his wife Natalie Elliott and three daughters, Edie, Inès and Bunny, at his bedside in their adopted home of London.” The family announcement did not state a cause of death.

What Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness said
Jackman and Furness shared a joint tribute. The Guardian reported their words: “We are devastated to hear the news of Bill’s passing.” They also praised “His talent, his joie de vivre, the way he brought people together and his commitment to family,” calling those qualities inspiring. They said they would miss his friendship most of all.
Who was Bill Granger?
Granger was a self-taught Australian cook whose work spanned restaurants, television and food writing. He opened his first restaurant, bills, in Sydney’s Darlinghurst in 1993. His relaxed approach to food and communal dining helped bring Australian-style breakfasts to an international audience. Dishes associated with his restaurants included avocado on sourdough toast, scrambled eggs and ricotta hotcakes.

ABC News reported that Granger published 14 books and presented five cooking shows over his career. It also reported that he received the Medal of the Order of Australia in January 2023 for his contribution to tourism and hospitality.

The family’s initial announcement did not give a cause. A later obituary in The Guardian reported that Granger died of cancer; that information was not included in the family statement announcing his death.
