Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult reunited publicly in November 2024, more than two decades after they appeared together in About a Boy. A photograph from the Governors Awards captured the pair together; a separate, more detailed reunion came in a filmed conversation Vanity Fair released on December 4, 2024, in which they recalled making the 2002 film and the gift Grant gave Hoult when filming ended.
Two reunion moments in November and December 2024
ABC News reported that Grant and Hoult met again at the Governors Awards in November 2024. Hoult shared a smiling photo of the two actors. That brief public encounter was distinct from their later sit-down: Vanity Fair’s filmed conversation was recorded at the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills and released on December 4. Vanity Fair described it as a reunion 21 years after the film.

The conversation centered on their shared memories rather than a claim that they had stayed close or worked together regularly in the intervening years.
What they remembered about making About a Boy
About a Boy, released in 2002, paired Grant as Will Freeman with Hoult, who was 11 while filming. Asked about their first meeting, both pointed to the screen test as the likely occasion. Hoult said he had little memory of it; Grant, by contrast, remembered the audition warmly: “I just remember we all thought, oh great, great, we’ve got him, we’ve got him.”

Hoult recalled wearing a school uniform for the screen test and borrowing boat shoes. The two also reminisced about Hoult playing cricket between takes and becoming too hot to continue shooting.
Grant’s wrap gift: golf lessons and a signed bag
One of Hoult’s clearest memories was what Grant gave him at the end of the production. “You got me my first lessons and my first set of clubs as a wrap gift from About a Boy,” Hoult told him. Grant had signed the golf bag. The recollection gives the reunion its most personal detail: a childhood co-star’s parting present that Hoult remembered decades later.
Why Grant wanted to make the film
Grant said he loved Nick Hornby’s source novel and had volunteered to be involved in its adaptation: “And I put my little hand up, ’cause I loved the book.” He also described the film as a chance to show a different side after his romantic comedies, including changing his hair and adopting a North London accent for the role.
The Vanity Fair conversation was published while Hoult was discussing Nosferatu and Grant was promoting Heretic; those were projects current to the interview in December 2024.

Further recollections of working together
In a separate BAFTA A Life in Pictures transcript, Grant described Hoult as “a genuinely lovely person, Nick Hoult.” It is another positive recollection of their time working together, separate from the 2024 reunion conversation.
