WWE did not begin under the name WWE. Its official history traces the organization through Capitol Wrestling, the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and the 2002 adoption of World Wrestling Entertainment. That lineage is clearer than any single, definitive founding date or sole-founder claim: WWE’s official accounts describe important transitions, but do not settle those earliest details.
How did WWE start?
WWE’s official biography of Vincent J. McMahon says Capitol Wrestling broke away from the National Wrestling Alliance in 1963 and became the World Wide Wrestling Federation. The account names Vincent J. McMahon and Toots Mondt in connection with that transition. It is a useful starting point for the organization’s documented lineage, not proof of one uncontested founding moment. WWE’s biography of Vincent J. McMahon
That distinction matters because a promotion’s origin can refer to different things: an earlier wrestling organization, a change in affiliation, a new public-facing name, or a later owner’s expansion of the business. The official timeline identifies the 1963 transition as a key step without establishing a single earliest date or naming one person as WWE’s sole founder.
Was WWE always called WWE?
No. Its public identity changed over time, and the names correspond to distinct periods in the organization’s history.

What did WWF stand for?
In this history, WWF stood for World Wrestling Federation. Before that, the promotion’s name was World Wide Wrestling Federation. In 2002, the company announced that its name would become World Wrestling Entertainment, removing “Federation” and retaining the initials WWE.
Why did WWF change its name to WWE?
In its May 6, 2002 announcement, the company offered a business-positioning rationale: it said the new name better reflected its entertainment properties and global-market ambitions. Linda McMahon, identified in the release as CEO, said: “Our new name puts the emphasis on the "E" for entertainment what our company does best. WWE provides us with a global identity that is distinct and unencumbered which is critical to our U.S. and international growth plans.” WWE’s announcement

The same release said the company had begun considering dropping “Federation” after the World Wildlife Fund prevailed in a recent UK court action. That is the company’s stated context for the decision; the announcement alone does not establish the judgment’s details. The name change therefore combined a public explanation about the company’s entertainment identity and growth plans with a trademark-related context described by WWE.
Did the Raw and SmackDown brand split cause the name change?
The available announcements establish that both decisions happened in 2002, but not that one caused the other. In March, WWE announced that Raw and SmackDown would become distinct television brands. The company announced its name change on May 6. The separate timing and subject matter do not support treating the brand split as the reason for changing the corporate name.
