What did William H. Macy say when Emmy Rossum announced her exit?
Rossum announced in August 2018 that season nine would be her last. In his immediate response to Us Weekly on August 31, 2018, Macy said, “We’ve been expecting it.” He described the prospect of leaving after such a long run as daunting, with life after the show seeming both frightening and exciting.

His remarks about Rossum herself were supportive: “She’s young and I think she’s made the right choice.” He said she wanted to branch out and had another show on which she was an executive producer, then added, “I wish her well. I can’t wait to see what she’s going to do next.”
Was Macy upset that she was leaving?
He gave a more personal answer in a September 2018 CBS News interview: “I hoped that she would stay.” Macy also said he understood her wish to move on. He described Fiona’s absence as a kind of “empty-nesting” for the show and spoke about the approaching tenth year as a mix of excitement and apprehension.

Those comments point to sadness, not resentment. Macy could wish Rossum would remain while recognizing that leaving was her decision to make.
Did William H. Macy cry when Emmy Rossum left?
Yes. In an October 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Macy recalled crying during Rossum’s last table read: “I cried right in the middle of the table read in front of everyone.” He said his voice changed as he tried to continue, and other people began crying too. He also said Rossum would be missed and expected her to thrive.

What was known about Rossum’s reason for leaving?
Rossum had played Fiona since Shameless premiered in 2011, and her announcement confirmed that she would leave after nine seasons. The contemporaneous coverage does not establish one definitive reason for her decision. Macy emphasized her next opportunities and personal life; showrunner John Wells said she had been considering leaving and wanted to pursue other projects, including the Angelyne show and directing. Those details offer context, not proof of a single motivation.

In 2018, Wells said the writers would not kill Fiona off and wanted to leave room for future stories. Macy likewise said it did not feel like goodbye forever and hoped she might return. These were hopes and plans expressed at the time, not a promise that Rossum would come back.
