Tom Hanks’s rise to Hollywood A-list status was cumulative, not a one-film transformation. Comedy first made him a familiar screen presence; Big brought his first Academy Award nomination; Philadelphia established his dramatic credentials; and Forrest Gump consolidated that success with a second consecutive Best Actor Oscar. Hanks’s decision to star also helped move the difficult adaptation toward production.
How Hanks built a career beyond comedy
Big brought recognition without making it a solo turning point
Hanks had become known to audiences through comedy, but Big (1988) connected that appeal with awards recognition: the American Film Institute (AFI) identifies his performance as the source of his first Academy Award nomination. It was an important step in broadening his standing, not a moment that alone made him an A-lister. AFI Catalog

Philadelphia proved the dramatic shift
In Philadelphia (1993), Hanks took on a major dramatic role and won the Academy Award for Best Actor. That win matters to the story of Forrest Gump: Hanks had already demonstrated his dramatic range before he played Forrest.
How Forrest Gump got made—and why Hanks mattered
The film’s route to the screen was lengthy. Producer Wendy Finerman first read galley proofs of Winston Groom’s novel in 1985 and brought the project to producer Steve Tisch. Groom wrote an early screenplay, and two other writers worked on the material before Eric Roth was hired. Warner Bros. acquired the rights but later left the project, partly amid concerns about similarities to Rain Man. Finerman then set it up at Paramount.

Hanks agreed to play Forrest, and the project received Paramount’s green light; Robert Zemeckis was hired to direct. AFI’s production account makes Hanks’s commitment a concrete link between his growing stature and the film’s progress: his willingness to star helped the adaptation advance at Paramount. AFI Catalog
AFI lists Forrest Gump’s release date as July 6, 1994, with Hanks, Robin Wright and Gary Sinise in the cast, Zemeckis directing and Roth writing the screenplay. Its catalog reports an initial production budget of $50 million and says Paramount requested a $10 million cut shortly before production. Those are reported production-history figures—not a final cost, box-office total or profit. AFI also recounts a dispute over the film’s financial accounting, so reported gross and profit-participation claims should not be treated as settled audited results. AFI Catalog
What Forrest Gump added to Hanks’s ascent
Forrest Gump (1994) did not launch Hanks’s dramatic career; it confirmed it at the highest level. The Television Academy records Best Actor wins for Hanks for both Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, consecutively. The second win turned a breakthrough into a sustained achievement: audiences and the industry had seen him succeed in drama twice in succession. Television Academy
AFI lists six Academy Awards for the film: Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role for Hanks, Directing, Film Editing, Visual Effects and Writing for a screenplay based on previously produced or published material. The film’s success and Hanks’s performance became closely associated in contemporary coverage. In a 1994 Time report, Hanks described the film this way: “The film is nonpolitical,” he said, “and thus nonjudgmental.” That is his characterization, not a neutral account of the movie’s politics. Audience response and the longer view
Time reported in 1994 that the film was performing strongly at the North American box office and that audiences were buying copies of Groom’s novel and the two-CD soundtrack. The report described Hanks as central to the film’s appeal. This is a snapshot of contemporary reception, not a definitive final-gross record or proof of a timeless consensus. Time
The most accurate account of Hanks’s rise is therefore a sequence: comedy made him recognizable, Big earned his first Oscar nomination, Philadelphia established his dramatic credentials, and Forrest Gump reinforced them with a second straight Best Actor win while becoming a major award-winning film. AFI later honored Hanks with its Life Achievement Award, a recognition of a career much broader than any single role. American Film Institute
