The crew captured it with cameras mounted on the biplanes, helicopters pursuing them at close range, and a camera-equipped fixed-wing aircraft. Cinematographer Perry Teo says the team tested camera positions with pilots because the equipment affected the planes’ aerodynamics, and limited the aircraft used for safety. Most filming took place in South Africa, with additional shots made in England.
What Cruise did on the planes
The sequence was conceived around real wing-walking and a mid-air transfer between two biplanes. Aerial cinematographer Phil Arntz described the set-piece as Cruise’s character moving from one biplane to another in flight. Director Christopher McQuarrie told GQ that Cruise initially imagined moving between the wings and holding the tension wires. Wing-walkers explained that the requested movement would not work as described, so the filmmakers developed the action with specialists in stages.
Cruise told Sight and Sound he had wanted to try wing-walking since childhood. He also said airflow was a major challenge and described the sequence as an homage to Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton. McQuarrie told GQ that airflow from the plane’s movement and propeller together struck Cruise at well over 100 miles per hour; that figure is the director’s description, not an independently measured reading.
How the crew filmed the action
Cameras mounted on the biplanes
Teo told the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) that the production mounted compact Z Cam cameras directly on the planes and paired them with lightweight Zeiss CP.3 lenses. The positions and number of cameras had to be tested because their weight and placement affected the aircraft’s aerodynamics. Pilots helped the team work out how to rig requested angles while keeping the planes stable and the coverage useful for editing.

Close pursuit and alternate aerial angles
The production used two helicopters with different camera-stabilization and lens setups. Teo described a Shotover K1 mount with an Angénieux 36–43.5mm lens and a Shotover F1 mount with a Fujinon 19–45mm lens. For a close view from behind, the helicopter carrying the Fujinon setup followed the biplane from about five feet away, according to Teo. A fixed-wing Yak fitted with another Shotover system provided further angles, including shots that pulled away from the action.
These viewpoints served different purposes: cameras on the planes showed the stunt from within its physical space, while the helicopter and Yak could follow, reveal, or move away from the aircraft. The range of platforms let the editors assemble dynamic coverage without relying on a single camera position.

How the stunt was coordinated and what the accounts establish about safety
McQuarrie directed from a nearby helicopter and used prearranged hand signals with Cruise. GQ reported that Cruise had no radio in his ear during this part of filming; McQuarrie said Cruise patting the top of his head meant “stop.” Teo separately described using a communications system to speak with the pilot, whether Cruise or a stunt-team member was flying.
Teo said the production repeatedly tested camera configurations with pilots and limited the number of aircraft used for safety. McQuarrie also described detailed preflight briefings and attention to distractions in an interview reported by CinemaBlend. These are accounts of particular production procedures, not a complete public record of the aviation risk assessment.

McQuarrie told The Guardian at Cannes in May 2025 that Cruise became so exhausted he could not immediately get up from the wing. McQuarrie recalled that the plane had only a few minutes of fuel left and could not land with Cruise lying across the wing. The reported incident is the director’s recollection; the account does not provide flight logs. The same Guardian report quotes McQuarrie explaining that he associated wing-walking in the extreme airflow with a limit of about 12 minutes. That is his explanation of the conditions, not a universal medical threshold.

Teo said the production spent four and a half months shooting in South Africa, then returned to England for additional shots after the filmmakers identified missing coverage in the edit. The English pickups took place in Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire, and the crew waited for suitable light to match the South African footage. Teo also said the development and testing of the aerial coverage extended over a year. These are production timelines reported by the cinematographer to the ASC; they do not mean the stunt itself was filmed continuously throughout that period.

Children can learn valuable skills while having fun and learning via the thrill of helicopter flying.
Phil Arntz, the aerial cinematographer, also described substantial preparation and testing in the UK in an interview with Screen Global Production. The accounts describe a sequence assembled from practical aerial performance, multiple camera positions, and later pickup photography. They do not establish that every shot was captured in one continuous take or that no visual effects were used anywhere in the finished sequence.
