Toby Keith’s Kentucky Derby dream came true after his death: Render Judgment, a horse co-owned by his Dream Walkin’ Farms, drew into the 2025 field and ran on May 3. The path was not automatic: the colt was initially outside the top 20, then entered the draw after an injury-related withdrawal opened a place.
How Render Judgment made the 2025 Kentucky Derby
On April 30, 2025, the Kentucky Derby announced that Render Judgment had drawn post 15. The horse was co-owned by Dream Walkin’ Farms, the racing operation Keith founded. Render Judgment had been just outside the automatic top-20 position; a withdrawal following an injury created an opening for the draw. The official announcement identified Kenny McPeek as trainer and Julien Leparoux as jockey.
The draw announcement was made before the race, so it established that Render Judgment had a place in the field, not that it had already competed. The Kentucky Derby’s later retrospective confirms the horse ran in May 2025. The sources cited here do not establish its finishing position.
A dream that outlasted its owner
Keith died on February 5, 2024, more than a year before the 2025 Derby. His family continued the farm’s operation after his death. In its announcement, the Derby described Dream Walkin’ Farms as a 330-acre facility in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma.

The farm’s name also had a musical connection: Sporting News reports it was named after Keith’s 1997 song and album Dream Walkin’. That connection helps explain why the race story resonated as more than a sporting milestone; Keith’s musical identity and his work with horses were closely linked.
Keith’s long pursuit of the Derby
Keith had spoken about the Kentucky Derby as the race horse owners most wanted to win. In a 2019 Kentucky Derby Connections feature, quoted in the official announcement, he said: “The derby is the one you want to win. Yeah, that’s the one that everybody wants to hang on their wall, saying ‘I won the Kentucky Derby.’ But, God, it’s hard to get there. …horse racing business is (frustrating but) dream more. Everything’s rolling the dice. The next one is too. And it’s exciting. You gotta live on the edge a little bit.”
