Toby Keith helped create the opportunity for Taylor Swift by helping launch Big Machine Records with Scott Borchetta in 2005. But Keith did not discover or sign Swift: Borchetta had encountered her earlier and was the executive who brought her to the label.
What Toby Keith’s role was
Keith’s contribution was at the label level. He was involved in establishing and backing Big Machine, the new Nashville label that gave Swift a home for her early recordings. That makes him an indirect part of the story of her breakthrough—not the person who personally found her or negotiated her signing. The Los Angeles Times’ account and Billboard’s reporting identify Borchetta as the executive behind Swift’s signing and describe Keith’s involvement in Big Machine’s launch.
Who signed Taylor Swift?
Scott Borchetta signed Swift. He had encountered her during her early Nashville years, before Big Machine opened: the Los Angeles Times reported that he met her on an earlier trip while working at DreamWorks Nashville and asked her father to keep him informed. A later account also places Borchetta at a Bluebird Cafe showcase where Swift performed. The sequence matters: Keith’s role in launching the label helped establish the business context, while Borchetta made the signing decision.
How the Big Machine connection led to Swift’s debut
2005: The label launches
Borchetta and Keith were involved in founding Big Machine Records in 2005. Swift was 15 and became one of the label’s first artists. The available accounts support describing Keith as helping establish or back the label; they do not establish a specific investment amount, ownership percentage, or direct role in Swift’s contract negotiations.

2006: Big Machine releases her first album
Big Machine released Swift’s self-titled debut album in 2006. That release is the clearest concrete link between the label’s creation and the start of her recording career. It does not change the distinction between Keith’s involvement in the label and Borchetta’s role in signing her.
What Swift said about Keith—and what the clip shows
After Keith died in 2024, a clip from a 2005 WSMV 4 Nashville interview resurfaced. As quoted in TIME’s February 7, 2024 report, 15-year-old Swift said of Keith: “You’re in the room with him and you can feel it. There’s a power there and you’re just like, ‘Oh my God.’ I don’t think I’ll ever get to a point where I won’t see him and be like, ‘Oh my God, that’s Toby Keith.’” The clip is evidence of her admiration for him at the time; it does not establish who arranged or negotiated her Big Machine deal.

Why Keith’s connection to Big Machine still comes up
Big Machine’s later history drew renewed attention to the label Swift joined as a teenager. Its 2019 sale included ownership of her first six master recordings. Later reporting states that Swift announced in 2025 that she had bought back those original recordings. That chapter explains why the label’s founding remains part of the wider Swift story, but it is separate from what Keith specifically did in 2005.
